Ryzom

I did the fraps thing to record Ryzom and it worked. The only problem is the files are between 150-300megs each. Any idea how to trim them down any?

Adobe Premiere is kind of industry standard. Kind of expensive though for a hobbyist.

Virtual Dub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) for the basics is nice, and free, but not as powerful.

Vegas 5.0 is pretty good. I like it more than Adobe Premiere (Premiere has major stability problems and renders slower than Vegas on my systems). Those two apps are good for rendering into Mpeg2 format for making DVDs and SVCDs.

There's also a bunch of other tools that you can use to convert that raw AVI file to something more compact using XVID or DIVX codecs. The only problem with going this route is the "average Joe" might not have the necesary codecs installed to play the files. But if you search for something like "AVI to DIVX" or "AVI to XVID" on google.com you ought to come up with a lot of tutorials with links to the tools that you would need to convert to the more compressed AVI formats (XVID/DIVX).

Finally, there's the Windows Media Player Video (wmv) format that most of the people running windows will be able to veiw with little to no effort on their part. Windows XP systems should come with the video rendering applications built in under Start->Programs->Accessories-Windows Movie Maker, IIRC.

Rerendering a video stream normally isn't for the busy person with only 1 PC, as it can take several hours to do (8 hours to convert 2hours of video on an Athlon XP3200 w/ 1024MB RAM). However, my time lines may be a little scewed since the projects i normally convert are 2 to 4 gigs. So, it should not take you as long to convert your files since they're only a fraction of the size that I'm use to dealing with, but I still would not expect to be able to do anything "fun" on that computer for over an hour. How long it'll take you to convert the AVI is dependant on how much horse power you have in the machine that will be doing the work.

Windows movie maker 2.0 is awesome and free. It's on microsofts website. 1.0 comes with windows but is not as good. 2.0 might even have come with service pack 2.

I'm going to second windows movie maker. It's not all that complex when it comes to the things that you can do with it, but it's free and easy enough to use for most anyone since there is very little stuff that can be done with it. If all you want to do is maybe pull out some clips and stick them together with some sound, go with it ... otherwise get something more robust/expensive
