Melee vs Magic

well i'm a kind of person who always started a "magic" type of class in any mmorpg ive played.
After hittin lv 30 in Offensive magic i wanted to try the close combat again ( my melee was at lv 21) and wanted to" test" something.

as a mage i had cold and acid dmg 3, root, self heal 2, sap and heal aura
as a fighter i had only default and increase dmg 2
Hp 350
sap 400
Stamina 250
Focus 150

i bought a 2h ql 30 2H sword and recieved a full lv 30 medium crafted armor suit from the most beautifull and friendly Zorai girl in town , Iylana :)

i did the test on a Vigarous Kipee (solo) , i never could kill it with just my magic, after a long fight it went down with my sword :p

well it seems after a couple of other mobs ( diff kinds of ziams and ot²her animals) that soloing as mage is very difficult and as a melee you have no risk , specially with self heal

my 2cents :)

ps: really enjoying this game, so much to do, have fun and gl :)

Not being a strong magic user myself, I can only go by what others have posted, but from the selection of spells you mention I think the reason you may have seen this situation is a result of using root rather than fear.

Seems from other posts the best magic combo is to use a combination of fear and damage spells.

If the mob gets into melee range when you're using magic, you'll get many interrupts and be far less effective. Ideally you need to keep mobs as far away as possible.

You never mentioned what kind of magic staff you're using, so you may want to invest in a good offensive staff if you don't have one already. A good set of light dodge armour will help too.

Soloing with Magic is more risky than with melee, but also has more rewards - as mage you can kill mobs a melee of the same lvl wouldn't dream to touch.

You seem to miss an essential spell for soloing as mage - fear. Key when playing a mage is not to let the mobs touch you - fear kiting is the most effecient way to do this. Attack a mob from max distance (try to keep your spell range at 40m+). Cast 2 damage spells on it, it should be almost at you then. Fear it, and it will run away before it can attack you. Cast 2 damage spells,....

By using fear-kiting it is no problem at all for a lvl 20 mage to kill lvl 40 springhtly yubos, or for a lvl 40 mage to kill lvl 60 robust bawaabs or viligant kizobars or kipees. Try to kill those with a fighter of the same lvl as the mage and you'll be at your respawn point in no item.

Timing your spells correctly is extremly important as mage, and failure in this can often result in death. Playing a fighter is a lot simpler compared to this - but they cannot kill mobs with as a high lvl as a mage can.

There are some mobs which are hard for a mage, high-hp mobs in particular (for example gingos or the lvl 1-50 kipees). Don't try tp kill thoe with magic. But there are other mobs which are hard for fighters - try to kill a highlvl javing in melee and you'll see.

You also had a minor advantage that defense seems to be based on your highest level skill, not the skill you are currently using. So while you were attacking as a level 21 fighter, you were defending as a level 30 character due to your magic levels. I am currently a level 130'ish elemental mage, and whenever I want to get some fight xp to get some more hps, I can just go out and bash on creatures level 60-70 with my level 40 fight skill, and they can't hit me. If you are a mage trying to pick up some fight levels, the attack after dodge credit is incredibly useful, as you dodge 90% of the time.

Well im a pure battlemage - I concentrate on dealing damage out as much as i possibly can.

Last night i was fighting Affy in a 1v1. I was using root and then acid... even tho im a low level mage at the moment i was still doing conciderable damage to her and being able to avoid her hits.

I was hit quite a bit tho for 45 damage but having the ability to heal 100 damage every 120s made me quite happy with that.

I personally have never used the fear/damage combo but im told its quite effective. Another method would be to configure your spells to consume only sap and some hp so it would have no xtra cast time or decreased range. Set ur radar to 50m, select a mob and position urself 50m away from it,then blast away :) u should kill mobs around ur level before they reach you.
