Mage solo after 40 ?

Hi,

I have a mage in their 40s and I was wondering if anyone else has a hardtime soloing with one. It seems like the fear, nuke combo takes forever, a lot longer than a melee would be able to kill said mob.

Anyone have any tips or how to's for the soloing mage ?

Even with Fear-Kiting mages still have a higher damageoutput that fighters. When you compare the (maxed) weapondamage with spelldamage of the same lvl you'll see that it's pretty much the same. Fighters can do double damage with increase damage, but Mages have staffs to boost their spells, best I've seen (and make) have 97/97.

So, with equipment of equal qual both do around the same max damage, but mages deal almost always max damage while with fighters it's only every 2-3 hits. And cannot use increase damage all the time exept if they have stam healing backup (you can use it for free with attack after dodge,.., but you cannot use that for all attacks).

I am lvl 80 currently and usually only killed mobs which give me 2-3k exp since lvl 25. Main targets in Matis were springhtly yubos, baying ragus, scary & dangerous javings, all lvl 50-100 kizobars and kipee types. Currently I am killing vicous kizobars and kipees, which exp just dropped to 2.8k Will hunt those probably up to lvl 85 and then switch to the lvl 100-150 zone.

At lvl 40 I was hunting primarily scary javings in matis, robust bawaabs in zorai. Viligant Kipees & Kizobars are also good targets if you have cold.

A very recommended thing to do is to use fear as enchantment only. Fear 1 still works fine against lvl 90 mobs, on my staff I can cast it 70 times, which is plenty for a hunting trip. The main advantage is that it can be cast faster than from hand, meaning you can often cram one nuke more between the fears. And you can cast it without fail if you should miscalculate and the mob gets into melee range (you can even dodge then!).

Thanks for your reply. Do you use fear kiting to solo ?

Yes, 3-2 damage spells for each fear usually. Another thing which should be noted is to keep the range of ones spell high. 40m is still fine, but I wouldn't get below it.

To add to Shrike's advice: to help conserve on Sap, I've actually got 3 versions of each spell, a long range Sap/Health Credit, a short range Range/Sap/Health credit, and a Adapt version, which I change depending on the situation (such as grouping. If you have a healer in the group, use more HP credit to give them something to heal. They get XP, you have less downtime, everyone happy). When fear kiting, use the short range, then the long, then fear, rinse, repeat. Even with the higher ranger credits, you'll still be at 35m or so on missle spells.

I'm lvl 94 at the moment and I've actually given up soloing as a mage, mostly because I can't do enchantments yet so the fear kite trick can be dangerous, and I have a VERY good group which I'd much rather play with... When I have solo time, I usually spend it upping Fight for those extra SP to play with...

One thing about mages ... dont forget your melee skills. At least for the sp to buy HP and HP regen.

You can break the level to add more hp with magic but use your lower levelled melee skills to earn the sp to buy it. Example ... your a level 60 mage using level 20 melee fighter sp to buy your hp/hp regen upgrades. Doesnt matter what skill gets the level you can use any skill to buy the upgrade.

In the long run this gives you more sp in magic to buy those magic upgrades.

Yes, you shouldn't waste magic SP to buy those. A good alternative to fighting is foraging, btw.

Or raise fighting for Hp, and foraging to rid dp quickly and get back to the magic grind . Concentrate on HP because its not really funny to get gibbed once a mob sneezes at u....

I have a couple questions about enchantment: Do you get much xp for creating sap crystals to recharge your enchanted items? I was hoping to enchant my magic amp with fear, and using create sap crystals to for an added xp boost. Also, are there usually sap crystal creaters in each guild? Wondered if it's a niche I could fill.

Thanks
