The dangerous world of Ryzom

<Build extensive application, build = Lots of posting time>

In Ryzom, there appears to be a feeling amongst the devs that levelling happens far too quickly, not just in harvesting, but in melee and magic as well. So as patches come out and speculation grows about upcoming patches being tried out on the test servers, one group of people think the patches are nerfs, and another group of people think the first group of people are powerlevelers. I'd have to side myself with the powerlevellers, but in this game there is a good reason why you might want to do so.

I've played the game to level as fast as I know how because, compared to other MMORPGs, you get to see hardly any of the world until you are getting on for level 250 melee/magic. I don't find Ryzom's world nicely staged so that as you level, you can move out to more and more dangerous areas, encountering ever harder fiends. In Fyros they live hardly any distance from the gates of Pyr. If you want to get to other towns you have to sneak and insinuate yourself past mobs, hoping to hell that nothing is about to spawn near you as you go. I'm now at level 60 melee, level 55 magic. There is nowhere I can go and fight where I wasn't fighting 25 levels ago, at least not solo. Personally, I think that one of the game's increasingly few strengths is the graphics and world design, so I'd like to get to a point in the game where I can explore the main extent of my homeland and not die as soon as one of the thousands of aggro mobs around notices me. From my experiences to date, thats about level 250.

Actually, its at about lvl 150 ;)
only mobs in the scorched corridor and its outskirts will kill u instantly when u are lvl 100 ish. Or take a nice team of 5 or so ppl ur level and kill to ur heart's content . Soloing wont get u very far in ryzom.

Actually 60 sucks too. I got stuck there as well; theres only 1 small area in south-west MG to level, then onto KM for 80-100ish grouped.

I have no clue where to go if you arn't Zorai - Tryker for what I hear is a complete bust past 100 for example.

By 150 you can go alot of places with no worries as Pch sais; those places that still cause problems would still it seems be a pain at 250 as its numbers of aggros, not levels really.

Far as I can tell Ryzom is:

1-60 homezones
60-100 very specific areas in 120-ish zones
100-150 nowhere solo efficiently, groups have some very well guarded secrets on where to level
150+ No content

So basically don't worry about going exploring; it appears all the same anyhow.

EDIT: I wonder when the DEVs will catch onto the fact the leveling is spiraling out of control in this game is soley down to the fact that aff spells stick even when they instantly break for a couple of seconds?

I mean paint me pink and stick me on a toadstool but introducing the fix in Patch 1 rather than an immediate server down and fix just seems a little, well, lazy - especially given the impact.

Having said that, I suppose having a totally broken durability system where items degrade faster the higher your level is and having no content past 150 does kinda cap the playerbase advancement, but it does seem that they've decided that shooting themselves in both feet rather than putting on a pair of shoes seems to be the best option.

Now my new l30 character loved running around Fyros for the first 40 times, meeting people and avoiding Scowling Gingos and all that. Then he started getting itchy feet (ie I started getting bored) and so he went a whole 500m out. The first thing learnt that day and every day after was 'level or die'. Unfortunately this means running around Fyros even faster, doing ye same olde mission again and again or sponging off the guild.

After getting bored of this my character ventured 700m out and got killed lots, even in teams. Lesson two; 'level or die'.

Aha, I realise, this is a levelers game. So I wondered if I could be bothered to muck about without content for the extra 70 or so levels. If some of the threads are correct above then I could be in for a longer haul than that!

Now, I happen to love Ryzom, but will your average gamer call it quits around level 40 to 50? I think they will scrath their chins and be thinking hard about throwing in the towel. That will sort out the men from the boys, only question then is which one, the men or the boys, will play on?

Are you talking about a solo game? I admit that I am stumped by posts like these. My magic skills are in the low 40's and fight is behind that. I am Matis and often venture into the south to harvest materials that are of the quality 100 group. The greatest proportions of deaths to me there have been due to explosions subsequent to getting caught in a gas cloud.

At least in Matis after negotiating the choke point at the border I find it possible to get around by avoiding aggressive creatures.

In Matis proper I can travel now pretty confidently as I know where the gingos are and are not. I can kill most of the other dogs but am still at risk of death if two gingos attack me. (I now have a pretty good two handed sword and have put together some good dodge armor.)

I have mixed feelings about this. The world needs to be dangerous. If it is not, people get bored and go elswhere. One of the greatest things to me is that exploration is still a large part of my need to be in here.

Beware of what you ask for. You might not be happy to get it.

tell that to all the people in tryker for example that only solo :(

i tried for a about a week to get a team and wasnt in a single one

now ive gotten to matis, theres about 3x the amount of ppl here than there was in tryker, yet i still cant get teams other than the occational guild team

and i ABSOLUTELY HATE soloing !

if nothing happens fast, like increase the max xp in team to encourage teaming i cant be arsed to play this game any longer

Consider that most games only have 50 max levels of character..roughly.

Ryzoms has 250 levels. Of which many are split further..

I'd say a player was still a noob in levels 1-101, a moderate player from 102-151 and a Ryzoms maniac 152-200 and psyco power leveler..201-250...

Therefore the balance for xp raise is actually pretty good, it is just a pity that at max gain, you can still work out exactly how many mobs you need to kill and exactly which mobs you need to kill.

It would be better if all mobs gave a better balance of xp, so kill 2 yubo for the xp value or a goari.. make the goari hit for the damage of 2 yubos.. as an example only.
