hi, welcome to the great planet of Atys :D

the international server(Arispotle) is your best bet, as on the other 2 the official language isn't english, hehe. I'm glad to see more australian players join the game.

Healers are always popular as this is a very team-centered MMO, especially at the higher levels it is often hard to level solo. But don't get too focussed on one skill i would say, a character could, if you invest say, 10 years into it, master all skills ;)
would take so long because there are so darned many. My advice is to pick 2 or 3 and go with them. Or just do whatever you like, if you're bored of healing, pick up a sword or learn an elemental spell and start in that area ;)

I'll second your welcome to the wonderful living planet of Atys :)

The most important thing I would say is find a guild. I say this because unlike other MMO's, most guilds here on Atys don't just want you so their member count can go up. A lot of guilds will treat you like family and help you every step of the way. The people are friendly and I am going to say that Ryzom has one of the best online communities that I've ever found. Agree everyone?

Stay on Silan until you feel comfortable with the stanza making system. This is important to learn because as you grow, you'll find yourself expanding to all 10 bars and actually making custom spells to fit the occation.

Hope this helps :)

Welcome to Atys, Penancex.
I second referring you to the Newcomers Thread. Also just ask anyone if you need help, that is one thing that Ryzom is known for , is the Community.

The Universe Channel is for questions and answers and can be heard in all lands. Region will only be for where you are, such as Silan.

Welcome again

It depends on what you mean by solo-friendly, Vincire. There is no particular need to join a guild, and much of the content can be mastered solo, if you have patience and learn the tricks of the game. Melee, offensive magic, harvesting and crafting can all be leveled on a solo basis.

Some branches, true, cannot be leveled by oneself.

Healers, for instance. You cannot level healing solo. (It would seem obvious that one cannot learn to heal others by healing oneself.) However, as was mentioned, healers are greatly in demand, and in a small team healing is *easy* to level with the help of a friend or even a chance aquaintance. Once you get to a medium level in healing (say around lvl 100) you can be very useful in larger teams against bosses, even if you can't heal the tanks themselves fast enough, because you can heal the healers very effectively.

((Bosses aren't usually good for leveling, because they take a while to bring down, but boy are they pretty.))

This is a very cooperative game. Even I, who am an old curmudgeon (irl) found myself (eventually) having friends and joining a guild.

Now if by "solo friendly" you mean that the NPC quest-givers can get you the opportunity to be an uber-character ...

Well, in that case, the game isn't even "group friendly." :) :)

Come on in and give it a three-week trial.

Once the game went retail, I played solo until I was about level 70. I wanted to get a good sense of the game and experiment before I started joining teams and a guild which might not be so patient as I tried numerous variations on a theme. But my levels climbed like a rocket once I started teaming and even more so once I joined a guild.

The hardest part about that time was the pressure to be guilded. Recruiting was hot and heavy guilds wanted to secure their place of power on Atys. I guess I was playing from a unique standpoint in teh respect of having played the game thru all the open and closed (FBT) beta periods. Most of my friends from that period "went kara" and hung in Yrkanis I think mostly because the NA folks were confined to desert for most of their pre-repease paly time. But I just found the desert too perty to leave.

I actually joined the only guild that didn't try and recruit me :) . Even though OP's hadn't been introduced as yet, there was still faction friction and having many friends on both sides I wanted no part of FvF or PvP for that matter.

My advice for new palyers is to just "hang" till ya get comfortable. If you need a tutotial than Silan does fine job of not only teaching you all the skills, but more importantly, the value of diversification. Don't come into ryzom thinking that "I am gonna be a warrior" or I am gonna be anything. The fact is not doing soemthinga ctually gimps your character. For example doing melee actually makes you a better mage. Doing harvesting / crafting actually allows you to get better stuff (more cash and tardeable stuff).

If you are into PvP then decide what lore attracts you the most and gravitate in that direction as asking a player "what's better, kami or kara" will get different answers depending on what side that person is on. If you're not heavy into PvP, neutral guilds provide the same family atmosphere and help along the way without having to worry (well not too much) about server politics.

In short, come in, make friends, don't be in too much of a rush to commit to the priesthoods :) , and simply have fun.

And BTW, I keep weird hours and am often in team with an Aussie or Zealander
