Skill point question.

OK I'm new to the game so I'll just describe what happened and then we can go from there.

I'm making a mage-type character - my first character so I'm not really sure what's going on. One of the skills I trained was heal self - I bought this from the magic trainer and it cost me 10 skill points.

Now I noticed that the skill itself is actually listed under fighting skill not magic skill - so shouldn't it have taken the 10 skill points from the fighting pool? It took it from the magic pool. Is this because I trained it at a magic trainer?

There are a few skills that I noticed cross over from one skill set to the next. If the trainer determines what training pool the skill points are drawn from, it kinda sucks that I used 10 of my magic points since those are pretty hard to come by.

There are loads of skills here and very few points to use on them - it's gonna be tough to figure out which way to go - is this one of those games where I'm gonna have to throw away my first character or two and chalk it up to a learning curve because I've permanently screwed something up? I hate those and was under the impression that this game was different. Am I missing something?

Some skills do appear in different sets. Most life related upgrades appear in all trees, although they may come at different times. Focus related upgrades appear in both harvesting and crafting trees, as another example. In the case where this is the case, which skill points are used for the new skill is determined by you, via which trainer you use to get the skill.

You don't have to reroll if you don't want to. Soon enough, you won't even miss those ten points. They really won't make that much of a difference in a little while. It should also be noted that in the Patch One, the magic skill costs will be lowered a bit and there will be some kind of SP refund for those with affected skills.

Yes, you're missing something :-) I had this misconception when I started, but this is one of the main features that I love Ryzom for. Once you hit Level 21 in Magic, it will branch into two new skills, Offensive Magic and Defensive Magic. Now, this is the most important thing to know. Each time you level up in either branch, you will gain Magic skill points. So you could literally level up your Offensive Magic branch and then spend the skill points on Defensive Magic. It's very open-ended and you can master everything. The only real limitation is time. If you're still very new, and you think those 10 points have really hindered you (Heal Self is definitly not a hinderance and is necessary), you could start over, but I wouldn't recommend it. I don't know why Ryzom has 5 character slots, you only need one :-)

Welcome :)
I'm making a mage-type character - my first character so I'm not really sure what's going on.
One suggestion: read, read and read some more. :) Go to the guide section of this forum, then head to some of the fansites and get more info.

This is a really really good thing to have.
Now I noticed that the skill itself is actually listed under fighting skill not magic skill - so shouldn't it have taken the 10 skill points from the fighting pool? It took it from the magic pool. Is this because I trained it at a magic trainer?
You will notice that many things can be trained in using skill points(SP) from different skill trees. The upgrades to your stats (hp/sap/stamina/focus) are spread out in different skill trees. You can buy hp with any of your SP, but can only buy sap with magic points, stamina with fight points and focus can be bought with either craft or harvest points.
Yes it took the SP from your magic because you bought it at the magic trainer, if you were to buy it from the fight trainer it would have used fight SP.
You should be seeing some interesting possibilities here... Use fight to get your hp's and or stamina up, magic for sap (no choice there), and craft or harvest for hp or focus. Then you have the different ablilities you can get with multiple skills also like self heal, can get that with any of the trees. Can't list all the possibilities here, too many.

What I would have done in magic to begin with is to first get the damage spell, if you did not start with it. Once you have a spell you can do damage with from there I would have added my points to my sap pool and regen, then gotten fear spell (much easier to solo if you can make the mobs run away from you) when I felt comfortable with my sap pool. By this time you should be gettting more educated about the whole system and could make your own decisions for the future.
There are a few skills that I noticed cross over from one skill set to the next. If the trainer determines what training pool the skill points are drawn from, it kinda sucks that I used 10 of my magic points since those are pretty hard to come by.
They will not always be so hard to come by take our word for it. As you get farther up in level you will see there are alot of points to be had. As you level, the trees start to branch and you will get seperate SP in each branch that can be used for the skills you want to buy. Just be patient. :)

It may seem right now that you can mess up so bad that you would want to restart, but as you get higher level you will see that is just not really needed in this game. There are lots and lots of SP to be had and even though it seems like you need more than you will ever get right now, that is just really not the case. I will suggest you read up on some guides and get to understand the magic system a bit before you go spending points willy nilly in magic or any other skill for that matter, but 30-40 points "miss spent" now will end up not being so in the future I guarantee it.
If you can't find the info you need on the forums or at a fansite, then ask the people playing the game with you, most are more than happy to try to help if they can, good group of people playing this game. :)

Good luck and remember to have fun.
