Arguments, Ryzom-style

Hi! I'm a new player installing the game right now. From these forums I understand that the most usual way to resolve arguments in Ryzom is:
"I have been playing for 5 years already, and you only one and a half!"
I really hate this method. Should I cancel the installation program? Thanks and maybe see you in game!

No!!!, this is not the most usual way, and I am right because I've been here since early betas.... oh wait :P .... I mean yes, but no :) Just kidding.

Seriously now, no numbie, I think this is really not the case, despite having had a couple of weird threads today (and although some have been here since earlier, the first open, open beta was april 2004, so really few, few people here have been involved with Ryzom for 5 years). Although we do have some burps, one of the most regarded things here in Ryzom is the community. If you give some time, you'll notice things are quite ok. Even most delicate subjects such as PvP, battles, etc. are usually responded to politely, giving arguments and so on (sometimes, some players may sound harsh, but this is also depending on culture, lack of knowledge of english subtilities, etc.)

Sometimes, we "oldies" use our somehow debatable experience in given or specific game aspects. Some players are quite good at knowing the in game mechanics. Some times it's just us oldies re-telling past stories, etc.

The cases were the epeens are involved, and finishing the arguments with "hush noob, I've been here since..." are not the norm. Nowadays forums are a bit either silent or, given the subjects involved, a bit harsh, but if you take the time to browse forums, you'll see the tone is good. But do not miss Ryzom due to having seen a couple of times...

Yours

Ani

Definitely do not make the mistake of thinking that the forum or even Universe chat are "typical" of the Ryzom community. Many people tend not to say anything here unless they are sufficiently motivated about something, and so tempers can be a bit more raw than in "normal" conversation.

My experience in the game has been that people are amazingly friendly and helpful, and indeed forgiving of mistakes or misconceptions.

I'd also point out that resorting to longevity as a measurement of validity is a final straw resorted to by those who have no other argument to stand on.

EDIT: Hey Beau, check your start date, you are entitled to claim the wisdom of two whole years now. ;)

Hey Grandfather Fiach! ;)
What shall we make of this utterance of your elderly wisdom? :D

Now seriously, Numbie, welcome to Atys and let me assure you
you don´t need to fear this kind of thing happening often.
Even me, stemming from another Server, can say with certainty that most of us grumpy oldtimers won´t hold being a newcomer against you.

I guess its one of the addictive and almost contagious qualities of Ryzom, that we´re a friendly bunch, we like to share our experience and try to encourage civil behavior in our fellow players, regardless of "Age" in every meaning of the word. :)

If we do sound "harsh", myself included, we mostly come to our senses quite fast and try not to increase the damage that was accidentally done.

Enjoy your stay on Atys :)

Could you be a bit more imprecise, Valda ? :p

The other silly argument is "I have X masters more than you, so hush!". Silly, because it is so easy to get masters through power-leveling that the person telling you that could be, what I call affectionately a "high level noob". No matter the number of masters, if one is not able to act humble and civilised and his only goal is to shut you up, (s)he's really not worth losing your time, fetch advice elswhere until the other one cools down.

As oldies, our role is to teach the "good" example. The bad one has been demonstrated enough. This community cannot afford people acting like asshats. They make the whole look bad, sadly enough.
