Ideas for not leaving the game after being lvl 250 for a while ?

Just a brainstorming thread.

What would you suggest to add, implement or change in the game so that players who have been lvl 250 for a while simply don't leave the game because there were bored and had nothing else to do ?

I mean some people get bored after they reached the maximum level had can't find anything else to do after a while.

Should there be something else after besides just helping other players ?

I reached my first lvl 250 (Celestial Guardian, w00t!) after a bit more than a year of intensive... slacking. :p I don't see the point of rushing to reach cap as quick as possible. I love healing. I purposefully made the process longer in order to enjoy healing leveling teams as long as I still could. The most fun was not reaching 250, it was really the ride that lead there. Especially with heal which is a skill that you can't level solo, the crazy banthering in team chat or on Ventrilo made it priceless.

The only way to keep going is to build yourself a goal and a purpose to fulfill, and once it's accomplished, find another one. Ryzom is a challenge to the imagination. And I still have many more goals to fulfill. I'm not as slow as Nightblade, (masterless vet ! <3) but I should find enough projects to entertain myself for a couple years.

A good thing to implement to the world would be an event in which you actually contribute to building and developping Atys, so that it keeps blooming and growing. Someone suggested a temple event that wouldn't be over until the last piece of the building is gathered and crafted. Same for repairing some of the outpost ruins or conquering the Prime Roots OPs. Kitins or Marauder invasions... the Saga is back, let's live it !

Ryzom is mostly a MMO based on cooperation and teamwork... helping others is somehow obviously part of the game and it is one that I particularly enjoy, since it makes the skills I took so long to grind useful. What's the point of getting a master if it serves nobody afterwards ? A shiny title ? Bragging rights ? If there was no other use to being a master, people wouldn't feed themselves cats to get there faster, would they ?

Most people master a craft to make gear for others... being useful to someone else, seeing them wear your creations, knowing that they are tsatisfied and thankful, isn't that such an ego boost ? (Unless the customer is a demanding spoiled brat, but that's another story).

I noticed that, sometimes, when I'm utterly bored, and fed up of digging the same old jewel mats for my own perpetual grind, I start seeking random people, newbies or not, in need of help. I'm not even a multi-master yet !!! o.O One sure thing is that I generally have a blast doing so. (The rest of the time, I troll forums and read webcomics, really. Taking a break is nice sometimes.)

Maybe I'm just crazy, maybe I just can't stand being lonely in a MMO, maybe I'm just "too cool to be a chick" (I heard that one for real).

Maybe I really should refrain from posting at 5 AM to brag about how awesome I am because I'm making no sense whatsoever... :D

Woah, you're feeling adventurous. Don't you know it's against protocol to bring up such things unless you've been here for 10 years and have counted the spots on every Varinx on Atys, twice.

Seriously though, I agree it's about time the vets got some new content sent their way. (Ideally something accessible to all levels though really)

Don't ask me what, that's for the creative people to think on. If I had to suggest something though, I say continue on with the Kitin Lair. It's something they should already have a head start on, something the whole community will enjoy(PvE), and if played out well, could actually bring the saga back to life as lets face it, it's been dead for years now.

However, having said that, getting the game profitable has to take priority. For me that means bug fixing, user-friendliness improvements, and so on, to make the game attractive to newcomers.

The game hasn't been out for 10 years, yet. Glad to see I'm not the only one who takes the question with a pinch of salt, a handful of marshmelloes and, a dose of humor. *gasp*

But really, just give the masters something that makes their mastered skills useful. I'm sure the community has more ideas on the subject than the devs could ever dream to implement.

EDIT: This is directed specifically to "new masters" and "near masters" (my peers) looking for ways to use their skills. It is not intended to address the needs of oldies who have already done all of this and more. I wouldn't want to presume to give advice to them - I need to learn from them. I didn't do a good job of making that clear when I posted it originally.

A few general suggestions:
  • Discover that leveling skills is a means, not an end.
  • Be creative. Use your brain for something besides clicking the next cratcha until you drool on yourself and pass out.
A few specific suggestions:
  • Conquer an outpost. This will require more than just personal skill mastery.
  • Discover a new crafting recipe. No, they aren't all known already.
  • Put together and lead a team to develop and execute a player-run event.
  • Build and host a ring scenario.
  • Write a machinima screenplay, get a group together to record it, then edit it up and send it to Acridiel to share with the rest of us.
  • Organize a raid on a kitin lair.
  • Help people. (I know, I know, but it's still one of my favorite things to do.)
  • OK, I'll stop now, but could go on for pages and pages.
What do all of those things have in common?
  1. Self direction. The Ryzom "end-game" does not require waiting around for someone else to entertain you.
  2. None of them require mastering any skill. Do them now, not later.
  3. All of them are available right now. No waiting for Spiderweb to do anything.
EDIT: I certainly don't object to adding more content or features suitable for high level characters. Quite the contrary, I think it would be great to have more. {insensitive comment removed - mea culpa}

EDIT 2: The poll choices imply that there is currently nothing to do but help others after grinding out your first master or two. As this is a false assumption, the results will have no useful meaning. Besides which, who in their right mind would vote "no"?

Treking:
- single with your master everywhere (with AOD/CG, with magic+ master melee, in HP suit, without HP suit, in HA)
- single with a new lvl 1 char everywhere
- group with bunch of newbies who crash, delay, loot around, stray from your path (no, treking is only accidentally helping others, treking is a challenge for you)
- group to show good digging areas
- group with 60 fame to all tps
- single + 1 newbie
- hardst of all: single + bunch of newbies who crash, delay, loot around, stray from your path

That makes 10 activities that can last some 4-5 months.

Organise contests. (No, it's not about helping others, it's making yourself a favour and a pleasure, be successful - it's not easy)
As you ask precisely this question probably a fashion contest doesn't seem interesting for you so I'd suggest 2 other: a contest for oldies and one for newbies (lvl 150 max or so): pvp with big massive prizes (where from? heh, get them, fundraising isn't a payed job for nothing in RL).
You will realise soon it's not easy and you'll be very frustrated with the first attempt and exhausted phisically after a successful one.

Go in a newbie guild (or an old guild populated by newbies) and hunt all bosses with them. Camp, even time them if necessary but mainly see if you're able to lead a bunch of newbie masters to tyrakoo/mekooo etc without getting wiped. Ok the newbie guild may have some advantages, but let's see first if you really succeed.

I agree there should be more content for oldies, but getting a master doesn't make you an oldie.

The only way to get bored in Ryzom is to bore yourself.

That said, I must agree that more activities and features would be a good thing. Also, the Ring should receive some updates and fixes to make it more appealing.

Not being funny, but I'm getting sick to death of hearing "make your own fun you lazy sods".

God gave me the tools to play with myself already and I don't need to pay a tenner a month for the privilege.
