Also, I am retooling my "Immersion Project" rules to fit into the world of Atys.
Here are the Rules, adapted a bit from the website. Bear in mind I used these mainly in Vanguard and a few other games.
1) Only certain forms of travel allowed. (Only mounts or walking. No teleportation.)
2) Only realistic forms of chat, such as /say channel, /shout channel and letters. No tells (usually I have to allow tells because I get so many sometimes. Ryzom has no /afk message response either.) or chat channels. (This rule stays the same throughout all my games, pretty much.)
3) Only allow a recall a limited amount of times per month. I will only allow one recall to one place once a week. (Doesn't apply)
4) Stop leveling at a certain level. For me, it will be level 30. This allows me to not only learn my skills at that level, but to represent the real life possibility of always having someone bigger and badder than you. Also, its part of who my character is. (Looking into this, and at what level it would be. Right now my highest is 140 sumthin', so maybe stop there and catch everything else up to it?)
5) Use role-play speech. Not thus and thous, but avoid modern day speech and references. Try to stay in character.
6) Perma-death. If my character dies, hes done. I am considering an amount of time that he would have to be dead for (say 2 months) before another character would have to perform a ceremony to rez him. Otherwise, hes just gone. (This one I LOVED in Vanguard. BUT, when he died, he DIED and I couldn't stand it. So, after a while of getting more used to it, I might try it again. It really gave a sense of danger.)
7) Realistic trade: your character has to make a living. Trade is the most common, in a real life setting. So, with a little adventuring, I will be a trader. I can only sell my trade goods at brokers that are in certain cities, like (cities from other games. In this case, I would trade between certain cities.)
8 ) A home base. I have to nominate (my home will be the place) a place that will act as my true home. I can only check my mail there, and have to go there or an inn to log out.(My apartment would work.)
9) Only use a physical, blank map that needs to be filled out by me, in real life. Use landmarks and the lay of the land to get around. This has proven to be MUCH more difficult than I thought. But FUN! (This was my favorite rule of all. I had a great set of maps printed out, blank. I filled them up myself and then lost them in Las Vegas. If anyone knows where I might get a blank map, let me know! )
10) MODs: (This does not apply to Ryzom.)
11) Weather: If the MMO has a good weather system, or at least a good ENOUGH weather system as well as a good day/night cycle (if the game world has day/night) then there must be realistic limits put on how long a character can adventure without rest. Even heroic characters need rest.
If the weather becomes poor, but is not that bad, my character can adventure like normal, but would need to cut his adventuring time down by half a day. If the weather becomes SEVERE, he (or she!) would need to find shelter or a campfire. He would need to rest there until the weather passes. I am still working on penalties if he cannot find shelter. (Working on how this would fit into Ryzom, being that they have incredible weather, but no real shelter to go into..no real buildings just sitting around to hide in. I might make a rule allowing my mount to act as some kind of rain shield?)
12) Food: Some MMOs (like EQ2) will already tell you when your character is hungry and thirsty. I will have to check in most of my current MMOs but there will be a set amount of time for my character to go before he needs to rest and eat. Possibly after half a day of adventuring would he need to rest and eat a meal. (I LOVE this one, but wondering how it would apply to Ryzom.)
I know I am missing a few, but I am playing this way now. So, if anyone can think of any other ideas let me know. I would like to see if this is close to what people think a hardcore servers rules would be like, and show that until we get a server like that, the game can be played and enjoyed this way.
To round out the experiment, I am going to start a brand new alt and level him this way. (This last sentence was from another game, but I think I will start a new alt and level him up this way.)
So, I need some blank maps, a new alt, and a website to stream it from...hmm....AHA!
Anyway, any ideas or suggestions would be great!

And speaking of which, here is the new 'cast:
Voyages of Vanguard (and other fun and unusual games) #59
Mon, 10 Nov 2008 01:29:00 GMT [download/play]
The highlights from this show:
I explore what "sandbox" means. I covered this topic a few times, but wanted an update. I think it is thrown around as much as "polish" and needs to be stopped.
Life is a sandbox, and yet we don't go around slaying orcs.
Enjoy!

Fantasy, science-fantasy, and science-fiction worlds don't have to follow the same rules of realism as pre-modern Earth did. Every game, unless its lore specifically states somewhere that distance communication is impossible, has loopholes from which a plausible explanation for tells and chat channels can be formed. So, to the idea that those are out of the question for roleplaying, I say
bah.

Well, (deja vu here being that I talked about this for months on another few forums! hehe ) none of the rules are meant as steadfast, and never stand in the way of fun.
I made them and play by them (only recently in Ryzom, in other games I have playing this way for half a year) to try and attach myself more to the game.
No tells (even if the game allows) is the same as not allowing myself flying mounts in another game even though it was common in the lore and "ok." I said my character was afraid of heights.
Mainly because I knew that if I was using a basic map, all I would have to do is fly up and look at a "map" of the ground below me..kind of a cheat for me.
So, these are just little fun things to try out. I now have my perma-death character in Ryzom made, and will be re-instating it in other games. In VG, when my main died, I couldn't believe it. I let him sit under the earth for a bit before I couldn't stand it. So, this time, I will make it stick!

Ahh, I understand.
I had a permadeath character in another game for a while. A time came when I didn't have time to play him anymore, so I presumed him dead without really roleplaying out a death. Later I had more time and I missed him, so I came up with a complex storyline to explain where he'd been and give him the ability to cheat death like not-quite-everyone else. So either way, taking a character in an unusual direction such as permadeath had good results.

It sounds weird, but I enjoyed the time my main (in Vanguard) was dead because it was a "next chapter."
All of this feels like Tolkien's "sub creation" stuff: making up all the little details like language or backstory.
So I have my perma-death character made, and will make lil icons for all my perma death characters for the website.
Then I am going to write a "last will" or something, or make a "living will" alt to hold the main's valuables in case of death.
This is a lil morbid, but oh well! lol
