With regard to:

I'd say that, if looked at Ryzom alone, those numbers would be much higher.

well Ryzom is a
- complex
- non quest based
- RPG
and only in the end MMO
So of course the population tends to accumulate from certain demographical regions.
However this comes to contradict on a less empirical basis than player articles the idea that Ryzom shares the same market with WoW.
It provides also a good matter of thought when we critic the failed GF advertising effort and consider a future advertising effort.

The only real relationship between WoW and Ryzom that I can fit into my psyche is that Ryzom is something one might play after they have outgrown WoW.
From the basic "ground rules", graphic style, character choices, levels of freedom, etc., it just seems that the original architects of Ryzom were pointing at an older audience. When my younger two sons have their friends over, they all play WoW or have played WoW. My oldest son looks at it like he does Britney Spears and The Backstreet Boys" after he discovered "real music" .... something he'd rather you didn't bring up that he was involved in.
Looking at the ages of for example a team I was recently in (53, 58, 70, 56, 34, 27, 32, 44), it seems to be well above that studies numbers.
As for marketing the game, the player made videos such as the one about teh virtues of the Fyros people would be a great start.
