After reaching the character screen and choosing a character, it begins to load, but always stops at the same point and doesn't continue, no matter how long I wait. Haven't had troubles so far until now.
What's wrong?

This has started happening to me last night. I download and started playing the game for the first time ever on tuesday. I didnt get errors or crashes, everything seemed to run great. I even cranked all the video settings up and no issues. Although the engine is a little dated everything looked beautiful and stylized. But now I cant actually get to the game world. I've restarted the machine a few times with no help.
What happens: I log into the game, it checks files for updates, then goes to character screen. I choose my character, then watch the progress bar of pictures fill up at the bottom and then it just sits. The mouse cursor moves around, windows shows the process as running, but it never goes to 3d game mode.

For no obvious reason, I was able to get in and play last night. I didn't make any changes on that machine or try anything else to fix it.... nobody here suggested anything so I didnt do anything else. But it just loaded up and worked last night. It was my last try before uninstalling and moving on to a new game. It was nice to get in and check out more of the game, I was even able to tinker around with the game editor a bit. I think i would like to stick with ryzom for awhile. If things suddenly just stop working all the time and no explanations are given, staying here might not be a good idea.

i too have had this similar problem except mine does load the game screen after choosing the char problem started for me after i made my second char i played with her from the point of doing the first crafter mission and then doing the the second one it just stopped in the middle of me walking and stayed at the please wait that sometimes pops up but stayed there for 5+ minutes. I have tried with both chars and still i can't get either char past the same point, I log them in and they may get a few steps but then plz wait pops up and that is it for my game play. Computer has been restarted several times, but to no avail on either my first or second char my computer is at full specs to run this game and have been playing it for a few days now it has only been today that it has started messing up. Besides telling me i don't have the correct hardware or drivers which i do is there any other problem that could be a problem keeping me from playing?

router. try removing it from the loop and see if it makes any difference.
or delete 'string_client.pack' from 'Ryzom\save' folder. helps sometimes.

removing the router is not an option there are two of us that play the game in the house. will try the other and see if that works. oh and thank you for responding.

Just remove the router temporarily to see if that's the problem, nobody suggests removing it permanently. It's a troubleshooting step.
If the game works correctly without the router, then you can focus on configuring the router to allow the game to work. If not, then the problem is elsewhere.

It's sad to hear this is still happening. I tried this game in April of 2007 (second time I tried it) and this was my biggest issue. It's been going on for years now and it seems that none of the devs have taken it seriously. I would like to try again, but I simply won't until this has been confirmed to be fixed.
I tried pretty much everything, including all of the suggestions by users. Since there is such a discrepancy between my previous system and yours (OS, at least), I'm resigned to believe this is a problem with Ryzom, not any hardware or software incompatibility.
If it isn't fixed, and quick, Ryzom in its newest incarnation will fail; you cannot ask people to pay for something they can't play. A pity.
My previous threads:
http://forums.ryzom.com/showthread.php?t=29697
http://forums.ryzom.com/showthread.php?t=29713
Other old threads with the same problem:

Seriously, that is just ridiculous that it is still an issue.

removing the router isn't an option because my husband is using his computer at the same time i am for work or other things so taking it out couldn't be an option for me even temporarily because of that but when it happened i did check the connection spot in game and it said fs.using the previous suggestion to delete the file helps me to get back in and play but if i don't delete that file when i log in it won't let me play at all. so it seems it could be a router problem but with there being two of us using the router i can't remove it and my husband has decided that i have made the game not fun any more since i have had problems & he hasn't seemed to have them he doesn't want to hear about it. & he is the IT guy and has the IT job in the family doesn't want to help so i am just gonna have to keep deleting the file to play until the game is fixed completely.
