OPENGL on an ATI card.
OPENGL on an ATI card.
I run a Radeon 9800 256. Whenever I turn OpenGL on, all of the windows in the game get all screwy. I was wondering if any other ATI users are having problems with OpenGL?
Re: OPENGL on an ATI card.
use d3d on ati cards
Re: OPENGL on an ATI card.
Actually, although that is what the game recommends, I've found--and I believe other ppl have, too--that ATI runs better in Open GL than D3D. Actually, my game won't play at all with D3D. I just get a black screen or a freeze-up and have to reboot.kayeffem wrote:use d3d on ati cards
By the way, this thread belongs in the Technical forums. I'm sure Cerest will move it soon.
Re: OPENGL on an ATI card.
*shrug* I run the game in D3D on my Radeon 9700Pro 128MB and it's fine. I haven't tried OpenGL yet... but I get more than playable framerates with the settings that I use at 1600x1200 as it is...
Re: OPENGL on an ATI card.
ya my ati will not run on d3d at all. It seems to work fine on opengl so eh, whatever.
Re: OPENGL on an ATI card.
My 9000 mobilty wont run the game at all, but it is also in a loptop and other problems exist there. But I use an ATI card in my desktop and use OpenGL. Direct 3D has reported problems with Ryzom. The first thing they tell you in the tech support is to switch to Open GL if you are having a graphics problem.newyorkd wrote:I run a Radeon 9800 256. Re: OPENGL on an ATI card.
Yes I have a Radeon 9700pro, and if i choose OpenGL then after a few minutes all my windows fill with corrupt data at which time I have to quit the game. The other option is to choose D3D and the game plays almost perfect besides a couple of lockups each day. I seem to always lock up when I'm swimming
Re: OPENGL on an ATI card.
I have just the opposite problem, Radeon 9100 -- Open GL fine, never a problem D3D, lockups.
Re: OPENGL on an ATI card.
I finally attempted to run Ryzom in OpenGL on my Radeon 9700 Pro last night. It's a no go for me too. However, I don't find this to be too much of a problem since the 9700's and newer typically run faster in DirectX anyways. Incedentally, I attempted this using ATI's Catalyst 4.9 drivers with the Catalyst Control Center.
Incase none of you have noticed there is a relatively clear division in which ATI cards can run D3D and which can only run in OpenGL (in Ryzom). The Radeons model 9500 and higher run Ryzom in D3D better than in OpenGL (there are exceptions ... though I personally suspect driver issues with people that have these cards and cannot run D3D). The Radeons with model numbers lower than the 9500 have serious problems in D3D.
Another intersting fact for some of you is that if you have a Radeon with a model number lower than 9500 (e.g. 9200, 9100, 9000, etc.) then you have a card that is based on the graphics chip used in the Radeon 8500. The Radeon 8500 is very out dated and when it was new it was meant to compete against the GeForce3 (GeForces are now in their 6th model generation). The main graphics APIs back in those days were OpenGL and DirectX7. Also, somewhere Nevrax has mentioned that if you are using a Radeon 8500 then you should run the game in OpenGL. That would not be limited to just the 8500, but it would include all crads that are based on the same graphics chip that the 8500 used. Which would be all Radeons with model numbers lower than 9500 (i.e. 9200, 9100, 9000, etc.).

Re: OPENGL on an ATI card.
You might want to try Omega drivers instead of the official ATI releases. Currently using Omega version 2576 on my R9700 Pro and works great. You can download them and many other tools here:
