Microsoft does it. American Idol did it. The company that makes that wierdass new toothbrush with the built in toothpaste is doing it... people will always copy what's better than them.
Does make me want to slug the smarmy git though.

nothing wrong with COH/COV. Its great for letting off steam on *mostly* helpless NPCs - just try playing a scrapper ;J It goes something like this:
"hmm... a good dozen robots/criminals/ghost-things my level..."
*charges in*
*mucks around for a few minutes of intense, finger-cramping combat*
*walks away barely alive*
*regens while looking for another group to fight*
rinse and repeat.
A bit one-line and nothing to do BUT fight things - but I would have to say COH combat is more fun than most fights on Atys *cringes, waiting for both gods to strike her down* then again, if Kamakaz had Tabithia's claws and regen... she would be far more fun ;J The fact that they are trying player-created content is a good sign if you ask me. Anything to help the market drift away from cookie-cutter games that don't require any intelligence or creativity.

eheh...well, if you read my sign on mmorpg.com i'm a CoX 3 years player in eu servers. I played it heavy just with the main, now I just play it casually. It's good for just some fast action, but once u got a single lvl 50 u have done everything. Extremely repetitive and alt-ish. It's just a comic related mmo, nothing comparable with the depth of Ryzom.
But you seems have missed my point, expressed in the title...

I highly doubt this is a coincidence. The system discribed isn't just similar to the Ring, it's the same as the Ring. Right down to secnarios
being available across all servers and players rating them.
Why spend time and money on developing their own shard unification system(it's the hard part) when you can buy it in a working state.
The scenario scripting language is iciing on the cake.
I was suspicious as to why Spiderweb paid 230K euros when the ammount of the debt was only around 160K euros.
For what they're getting and for what they'll use it, that price was a bargain.
If it turns out to be true, it does not bode well for a Ryzom resurection.
Hopefully, I wrong.....

Part of me is just happy somebody outside Ryzom finally realises the potential of the system.
Similar in concept to our character creator, it allows you, the players, to create missions and story arcs for your characters and others to participate in. You'll be able to pick the map, villain group, and objectives, as well as write the dialog and any clues needed for the missions. When you are satisfied with it, you can upload it and have other players across all servers play it and rate it. Fame will come to the players whose stories rate the best overall.
It doesn't actually sound nearly as elaborate as the Ring. CoH missions are very 'standardised'; the computer makes a random map of the chosen terrain type, spawns groups of enemies from the chosen faction of an appropriate difficulty for the team doing the mission, and places the objective at a random location (a boss to kill, an object to touch, or an NPC to lead out).
A lot of the complicated stuff the Ring could do just isn't possible in their mission system.
And anyways, CoH already has an editor for building your own guildhall complexes. It also already has cross-server friendlists and chatting, and a serverspanning market. Add to that how bland their missions are to begin with, and it seems quite easy for them to built a Ring-like system on it. With little left to gain from obtaining a similar system that was however designed for a completely different game.
They obviously peeked at the Ring and thought "what a great idea, let's copy it", and I can see the shiny candy value of then getting the opportunity to obtain the original, but I'll just stay hoping it wasn't them all the same. Ofcourse if next we get the GW Ring and the TR Ring, then I can only hope they'll be so inspired by what they bought that they'll make their MMOs more Ryzomish from now on >_>
