Ryzom

I’m excited with the news that there is a buyer. Now it is a matter of time before we all can enjoy Ryzom again. I’m wondering how the community would feel, and this is hypothetical of course; If for some reason everyone had to start from scratch, how would the community accept this decision?

One thing I did noticed during my short time on Silan was how ardent many of you were to play the game. I too jumped from one server to the other during the last days, and although my characters have no levels worth mentioning, I was a little irritated at having to start again. Of course this feeling quickly diminished once I started playing and interacting with others. And while I can accept starting over I’m not sure how Ryzom veterans will react.

The possibilities of this happening are very small. I just want to hear what you guys would do if this was an issue.

More questions! If you followed my post then by now you shouldn’t be surprise.

Ryzom fascinates me as much as it does many of you. I’m not only attracted to game-play, especially crafting, but also the lore of the game fascinates me. One subject in particular, Elias Tryton and the Guild of Elias. I believe the name given by the neutral community is ‘Trytonist’ and I want to know more about them.

During my short play time I met many Karavan players, and while they all seem nice as individuals I can’t say that my character will be a loyal Karavan. As I told someone “I refuse to join a faction just because it is the winning faction, much less follow a religion blindly, I will exercise my choice for hominkind and fight for the peoples of Atys not the faction.” Therefore I think it is clear my character seeks the Trytonist.

What is also clear is that since the Guild of Elias is a secretive guild anyone is free to be in Karavan or Kami in order to gather information, and work toward uniting a strong front for neutrality when the time comes to flesh out as a whole faction. This is my understanding from what I’ve been reading.

Some neutrals are faction aligned only for the privilege of teleportation. But lets be real, Elias was the first to open the rainbows that allowed homins to escape the Kitin genocide. Therefore it is clear he is equally powerful as the factions. I’m sure he will provide Trytonist with the means of teleportation once the secret organization can flesh out as an independent faction.

The Karavan clearly oppose him since they believe Elias can turn many homins against them. And the Trykers believe he is the husband of Jena and possibly a god? Although I think the definition of god here implies more to Icon. He is definably a hero since it was he who saved many homins during the swarming. Elias is an important role in the lore of Ryzom and may very well hold the many answers to unsolved mysteries of Atys.



My question is, based on the topic, is it safe to assume that in the future Elias and his followers will become a faction?

One of my goals is to unite a roleplaying community for Ryzom in the English server. I don’t think this game has one yet? Yes there are some that RP for the sake of PvP but there doesn’t seem to be an organized roleplayer community. Please if I’m wrong then point me to this community because this is where I’d like to be involved. There is a Kami alliance and a Karavan alliance but I don’t see a neutral alliance. Taking consideration of the current situation I’ll assume this community has since left Ryzom.

In the hopes that these players will return with the revitalization of Ryzom I’d like to propose a treaty by role-players, for role-players, about role-players. The idea is to start a Ryzom Guild Council- the Guild Council will be an out-of-game/out-of-character group of role-players representing the joining guilds. The council will work toward uniting and supporting the role-playing community by joint effort. Guild Council members will mutually discuss cross-guild interaction and support, cross-guild event/storyline planning, and other important topics within the role-play community.

If this idea is accepted by the Ryzom community and I see interest then I will take the initiative and open a free web-site to start the foundation. The site will cater to Ryzom role-players. This website will help role-play guilds interact with each other and the whole role-play community, from the light/casual role-player to the heavy/serious role-player, by becoming a common gathering place.

Regarding how I'd feel about starting over:
I've done it dozens of times already as a natural altoholic. But of course, I usually had the option of returning to my older characters. In the circumstance you posit, I wouldn't have that option...and I really wouldn't care. The only character I have who has very high levels is nearly unplayable due to RP reasons, and my favourite character is relatively new. But even if those facts didn't exist, I still wouldn't care, because levels, items, and dappers are just insignificant database entries. Everything I need to enjoy playing resides in the rest of the game and in my own mind.

Regarding Elias Tryton and his followers as an official faction:
I don't know if that was in Nevrax's plans. It would be a logical development, though.

Regarding RP on Arispotle:
That all sounds great. Even when there were RP guilds extant on Arispotle, they generally lacked solid interguild OOC communication and cooperation. A regrowth of the RP community could benefit from such an arrangement as you have proposed.

We (all remaining roleplayers on Arispotle) would have to put in a lot of effort to effect that regrowth, though. Most are already entrenched in non-RP guilds, and others (like me and possibly a friend or two) would be splitting their time between servers. Perhaps we could recruit new roleplayers into the game by watching MMORPG aggregate websites like mmorpg.com and OnRPG for people requesting information about games where they can find good RP, and telling them about Ryzom.

I've been browsing youtube and enter Ryzom and guest what I found? many many trailers of Ryzom and one that really captured me was this old trailer from Nevrax...I hope that the new owners will make this possible because to me it depicts the true vision of what 'The Saga of Ryzom' is meant to be.

As a veteran player starting over is not something I would really want to do. I'd be willing to start over if there was a complete reset to the storyline, meaning no Outposts. Racing to grab OP's and the tension that would entail would most likely chase many of us away, quickly. If OP's are open on a reset-server the game will be all about PvP and power leveling. Billions and billions of innocent psyclopla would meet continuous death. Those who know how and are willing to game the system will quickly rule the server. A restart with a new vision and a new saga is one thing, a restart just for the sake of restart would be a disaster.

The Guild of Elias was, at least on Aristotle, hardly developed beyond the pre launch mythos. I think it was thrown in as a wild card story line. I have always found it interesting that Elias has been so frequently referred to as neutral. I have also found it interesting that so many "role players" only accept "role play" as "role play" if it is about being neutral.

In the lore, there was only one faction before the swarming, the Karavan. Only the Karavan had teleport technology. In some racial histories Elias stole the TP tech, in others he was more like a hologram leading Homins to the Karavan guarded rainbow gates. The one thing we do know is no one has ever seen an Elias developed TP, even when "Elias" made a brief appearance in the live game, he did nothing that any new refugee could not do. He certainly didn't port anywhere. The story line ended with him dragging a bunch of Homins down into the prime roots, their last message spoke of their impending doom.

I suspect it is much more likely that if an Elias existed he was tied to the Kami, who managed to get TP tech shortly after Elias's appearance in history.

Elias is a cult of personality taking advantage of the Homins who do not want to accept the fact that we need the more powerful factions to survive on Atys. Elias has never resurrected, saved, ported or even aided a Homin in our life times. He is an ideal, an illusion of self determination, an individual who can survive without the aid of the higher powers, he is a Myth.

I do not think it is safe to assume that the cult of Elias will ever become a faction. 95% of the playerbase would join a Homin based faction over the Kara/Kami. The Kitin have the role of common enemy all ready, adding the factions to the mix is a tad overkill.

You are correct that most of the role players congregate to the neutral position. I think if you were to open a forum/alliance based on Elias and/or neutrality, you would have a good response and that it would add to the overall gaming experience.

Just don't be surprised if my character thinks your character is ungrateful, manipulating, self absorbed, power hungry maggot.

Good points. I agree that if a restart was to occur a new saga would be the best choice. Do you think that with the current storyline a fresh start should be considered?

Sounds more like it was incomplete; based on the many concerns with the storyline, most of it was not finished, and my understanding is that other projects were rushed due to the financial issues in the past. I don’t think it was a wild card. Of course I could be wrong and probably I am. But! I like the idea of a secret organization working within the factions.

But you point out Aristotle; was the outcome different on the other servers?

This would be a disapointment. The meaning of RP is to act out your fictional character based on his/her beliefs. I could role-play a Kami or Karavan just as good.

Theoretically Elias is Karavan, and the Kami’s are also some kind of Karavan anomaly. As you’ve stated there was only one faction before the swarming. And if he stole the technology then there is a possibility he still has it.

Perhaps he is the sleeping Dragon. LOL There is too many unanswered questions in the lore. I don’t pretend I know the lore as well as you since you’ve been here longer than me, you’ve experienced more and I can’t help feel a little envy. [wink] But I disagree with you that Elias is only a Myth. If that was true then Jena and MaDuk are also myths, because not one homin has seen either of them. It isn’t Jena that resurrects homins, or teleports them, it is Karavan technology. I don’t know the source of the Kami’s power but because it is unexplainable it is ‘magic’ yet it must be some kind of technology/science.

My proposal is for RP not for neutrality or Elias. A neutral alliance can be created but that is totally different from what I’m bringing to the table.

I won´t comment on the whole Lore/Tryton thing because there are as many oppinons about him as there are players and a discussion of that topic would effectively lead nowhere at all.

But on RPing, I can say that for some strange reason it realy seems to be some strage case of server mentality thing.
On Arispotle RPers tend to stay neutral.
On Leanon (German Server) RPers are on all "sides of the conflict", so to say.
Although on our server RPers are relatively rare, we are a tight knit bunch and respect each other for our play. Funnily our Rpers stayed behind when the servers began to have problems and the PvPers left.
On Arispotle it was the other way `round.

There are Karavan RPers, Kami RPers and neutral RPers.
(Although the last are mainly concentrated in one Guild, but that might be just coincidence)

RP is not just about "playing a Knight". It´s about playing a charakters traits and belives too and we know and respect that fact, so we have no OOC problem with others RPing the other faction.

Strangely many people on Arispoltle do seem to have a problem with that.
And go at each others throats OOC, just because he/she is a Kami/Karavan.
I have absolutely no idea why that is the case and I might as well be mistaken, but from what I read over the years in some posts it´s a realy strange place to be
It sounds just like the Horde/Alliance OOC Conflict at WoW to me and that I don´t understand either.

I´d realy wish for Arispotle to develop a strong RP community and for it to get along with the non-RPers, but that will IMHO be an unfulfilled dream forever.
And also on both other servers, because the play-styles of non-RP and RP are way to different and while the RPers may even understand some of the non-RP notions, the other side seldom even makes the effort to try and understand us. *sigh*

I have no Idea about Aniro only that in the last month it took the same developement as both other Servers, in one side, in their case the Kami, becomming much stronger than the other and many people choosing to join "the winning side" for "more fun in play". *sick*
Wich destroyed the atmosphere (RP and non-RP wise) even further. *sigh*

RP-Servers, as in some other games, only become practical if there are enough players to use them the way they are meant to. If not, they´d just be "RP-Ghettos", as someone once stated in a heated discussion on the sense/nonsense of RP on our server. *coughs*

I´d realy like for both of these factions to coexist. But well, as I always say:

Oh, I most certainly would consider a fresh start if I were the new owner. If I felt I could deliver on the development side and have regular updates, I would most certainly start anew. With the previous lack of development and multiple GM's (and owners), why bother with trying to keep it all tied together.

Now if I had to get a server up quickly to bring in revenue, I would open with a large redefining event. Make all the old story lines obsolete, perhaps even destroy all of the OP's, the capital cities and many of the teleportation devices and make the players "earn" it all back. Which of course, is basically a reset but people get to keep their characters.

Now back to Role Play.

Role Play in Ryzom is practically mandatory. The way the David Cohen Corval designed the game, the lore works even if you do not know any of it, don't want to know it and could care less about it. I would argue that it is actually at its most effective with the majority of players being totally ignorant of Atysian history and is so by design.

I really don't think you will find it hard to locate role players on Atys. Over time, the game seduces a player, a character emerges, and a role player is born without them knowing they have been corrupted by the draconic ash.

Great synopsis Pero, one point though, the Guild of Elias teleported 50 or so homins to a secret meeting near the begining of the game (without warning) to the top of an otherwise unreachable cliff.

Oh wow!

I never heard about that. Was that before the north American server merge or did I just miss out?

(another smallish reason to start over would be that the NA server and the European server had totally different event teams at launch)
