Hey everyone, I'm just about to start playing the Ryzom free trial and I thought I'd check out the community and introduce myself.
I'm a big MMO fan and have played other games such as:
- WoW
- Anarchy Online
- Vanguard
- Guild Wars
- and most likely some others I cant remember.
I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me a little bit about the different servers and if the game is similar to some of the above games.
I've read through the 'Features' section and watched a few video clips and I'm impressed so far.
I really enjoy taking part in guild activities so if anyone is in an active and fun guild I'd love to join if you'll have me.
Thats all from me for now and I look forward to hearing from you all.

First I want to welcome you the boards and to the game.
There are 3 servers, 1 english speaking, named Arispotle. (Which im on).
This is the one i prefer, as i dont speak a word french or german...
I never liked WoW myself, but ive played the rest of the games that you mentioned. In addition to 4 years of SWG and this game
I am also the leader of the ryzom part of our guild, the exodus syndicate, theres more info in the guilds section on these forums.
http://forums.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31916
I suggest taking a look at the game itself before i will compare it to any of the games
Welcome to Atys.

Welcome to Ryzom!
You will find the community helpful and mature (mostly
), guilds that offer RP, PvP, buddies to have fun with or a combination of all three. The main skills of forage, melee, magic and craft split into different skill branches that get more detailed and specific the higher you go (approx 60 related skills I think), all of which can be mastered to level 250. So there is certainly depth of skills and many things to learn and do. I have been playing about a year and have almost mastered one skill, however, there are people who have played less time and have already mastered a skill or two, depends on your play style.
While on Silan, I would suggest doing the melee missions first to gain hit points and the ability to wear better armor and use better weapons. Or you can do multiple missions from different trainers, but i would suggest completing all or most of the missions available to you, since some of the missions give you special items that are very useful.
Again, welcome to Ryzom. If you have any questions please ask the community in universal chat, we would be happy to help.
p.s. I am relatively new to the MMO's, but have tried 4 ro 5 others since I started playing Ryzom, and in my opinion, nothing comes close.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply.
Just a few questions that may or may not be ported on the main page (I probably read right past it
)
Are all the different races able to play with one another?
What are the benefits of the two factions?
Are fighter and mage (or whatever they're called) the only offensive types? I am now looking at the character creation section and its got the gathering classes. Do they have any attacks or are they for gatherers only?
Thanks

Yes the different races can play with each other.
The 2 factions are just different stories, nothing more.
Fighter and mage splits up later on,theres a TON of different branches and you can do them all at once

Keep in mind that there are no classes in Ryzom.
You can advance in any and all of the skill trees without penalty, and switch between skills whenever you want (though it's ideal to have the appropriate equipment on hand, i.e. heavy armour for melee fighting, light armour for magic, light armour with focus bonus for harvesting, etc).

The Mage Skill Branch (There is no such thing as classes in Ryzom, every single skill is available to all the characters no matter what profile they chose at creation) later branches out into Heal, Offensive/Elemental magic, Defensive Afflictions and Offensive Afflictions (Which are also known as Debuff or Crowd Control).
In Melee, every single Weapon, including hand to hand combat, cand be mastered individually, there is dual-wield available for certain weapons.
Range Fight and Range Weapon Crafting are only available on Mainland. There is Pistol, Rifle, Launcher and Auto-Laucher as available weapons, and you can craft your own ammo. (Should, in fact, as ammo could cost you tons of dappers if you buy it instead of making it.
)
Hum... that and the richest harvesting and crafting system in the MMO market since SWG.
Did I forget to mention all the amazing people out there ?
Many reasons explain why Ryzom is unique... that's one of them.
