Concerns/questions from a new player

The game is certainly interesting, particularly the ability to customize abilities. However, as I work my way through the various Silan quests, I am struggling with some elements of the game.

1. Is there any way to review the entire text quest after I have accepted the mission? The mission tracker just gives a brief sentence on the what of each mission, and not the where or other details that may have been mentioned when the quest was given. Please tell me I am not expected to remember such details.

2. Quests that require me to make x number of items do not seem to count down in the mission tracker like the kill x number quests do. Once I have all the items I need for the craft quests, the tracker does switch to the 'turn in' part of the quest.

3. Speaking of this, only some of the quests will flag the turn in person in the radar compass. Most of the time, I have to remember where that person is, or ask the guide person on the island (don't recall the name). Also, if I happen to have 4 whole quests outstanding in my log, I cannot get this person to flag directions to someone as I get the max number of missions message. This is silly.

4. Where does it show my character level? How am I to decide when checking a new mob's level if the fight will be easy, medium or hard?

5. One of the mage quests I received required me to team up with someone to kill ten rendors. The quest text said something about them being very tough and yet I am, at my current level, able to solo them with little difficulty. Yet I am still forced to team to complete the quest? This is a big one for me. Is there much content in the game that will require me to group? Despite having played many MMOs, I despise forced grouping. Ninety-five percent of the time that will simply mean content I will never see.

6. If I do decide to subscribe, what can I expect from the mainland? I've heard that there are basically no quests at all. Is this true?

7. Finally, and probably my biggest concern, is that this game might turn out to boil down to a series of grind choices. With few to no quests, I am left with the options of grinding my fighting abilities, my magic abilities, my crafting or my harvesting. I can appreciate some sandbox style, but I need goals to strive for beyond attaining the next level of x ability.

P.S. - I have no interest whatsoever in PvPing, and little interest in forced grouping.

1. As far as I know all you have is a brief summary of the mission in your journal.

2. I seem to remember this as being a bug, although it doesn't countdown like other missions it does tell you when it is complete.

3. Yup only sum quests flag things, other quests you have to figure it out yourself from directions from the mission giver and the map.

4. This quest just introduces new players to teams, on the old training island before Silian there was very little teaming.

5. Think of Ryzom as a giant sandbox which has a lot to offer but is up to you what you want to do with it. There are quests on the mainland but they are related to fame and your fame can dicate which teleports you can and cannot get. On the island missions serve the purpose of teaching new players game mechanics and rewarding them the odd time with equipment to help them along. There are also encyclopedea entries on the mainland which are a series of missions that give you small bonuses like extra durability on crafted items or more focus.

6. Most of the MMOs I can think of boil down to grind choices when it comes to developing your character. There is more to the game than that though, but by limiting yourself to not teaming and not taking part in pvp you are limiting your access to content too. PvP is good fun in outpost battles when both sides are balanced and outposts produce xp crystals and special materials. Also big groups are needed to team and work together to take down special bosses and get special items from them.

It is possible to get by without teaming, harvesting and crafting are good solo skills and the fun in grinding is using different materials to get different effects on the final crafted item. With fighting and magic it is also possible to solo too, but can be slower than a team effort.

If you have any more questions ask them here or send me a tell in game. Or just ask around, Ryzom has a very friendly community just waiting to help new people out.

  1. No. You have to listen carefully to what the mission giver has to say. You can find the summary in your journal, but it doesn' contain the details.
  2. Some of the quest counter displays are broken; if you concentrate on one quest, it shouldn't be too hard to keep track of numbers, even if you get off by one sometimes... the counter does work, and the mission will go to the next step when you have done your job. Also, make certain you fulfilled the exact requirements, i.e. built ten pairs of at least quality xy; sometimes a build fails and you get one item of lower quality, or you need to kill animals of an exact class, etc. Do not sell any items or materials before you have finished the task at hand, you might still need them. If you have, try to remember which and craft some more, or failing that, craft all items you need for the quest again, to make sure.
  3. You have to either remember the important people, or you can place a landmark on your map ("M" key, right click, place landmark). Make sure to remove your finished quests, they are marked with a check sign; your journal has room for fifteen entries, and it does not care whether those are finished quests...
  4. As your character doesn't have "a" level, you have to check the action book ("B" key). The Mob's strength is indicated by a number of stars on a coloured background, 1x* means weak, 2x* stronger etc. Right click on the stars -> "help" to see more information.
  5. Kill them on your own, the quest will finish nonetheless.
  6. Yes, no "quests". There are lots of missions that involve running errands, scouting for prey, delivering medicine etc., but you don't get XP nor reward items. There is the encyclopedia that gives special knowledge like craft plans, or stats boni, for completed series of missions, but don't expect too much from that either. Ryzom is not a quest game.
  7. Given your statement that you don't like grouping, it might turn out a chore if you deem yourself a "leveler". If you're an explorer, there should be plenty to see and discover. If you're a socialiser, there should be plenty occasions for chat/roleplay/guildplay/... Ryzom is a massively multiplayer Role Playing game, where you can solo if you want to. I'm solo most of the time, but enjoy teaming up every now and then, and I've been having fun for over three years and can't see an end to it :)
Welcome to our giant plant, and I hope you enjoy your stay. Do come over to the mainland, it's worth it - hey, a month's subscription isn't that much ;)

I highly recommend using the landmark feature on the Map. I kept getting lost at first, too. But now I have about 15 Landmarks all around the newbie isle :)

I have a quick question about fame and teleports: is it possible to stay neutral and still be able to teleport everywhere?

You can at least use one of the teleporters in any level 1-200 region, but you need faction fame 33 (Kami or Karavan) for the 200-250 regions and even more faction fame for Prime Roots teleporters.

You wont be able to Teleport everywhere. You wont have Teleporter access to any of the Prime Roots zones, or the "purple" zones (ie the 200-250ish mob zones). You will have TP access to all other zones though still, many of which are still close to the zones you dont have access to.

So you can't have neutral fame high enough? I thought I read that you can "average" 50 fame with both factions. I suppose 50 is not high enough?

EDIT: I re-read the sticky and now I understand. Thanks!

You can get both to 50, however, with the release of the Temple Wars 2ish years ago, they changed the Teleporter system...

Neutrals: Max fame +50 both Kami and Karavan
Can get Teleporters for all zone but the Highest level zones and the Prime Roots. Some of the zones they can get both TP's others just one of them.

Kami: Max Fame +100 Kami, 0 Karavan
Can Get Tp's for all zones, need 33+ for 250 zones and 60+ for PR zones, but only get the Kami tp's

Karavan: Max Fame +100 Karavan, +0 Kami
Can Get Tp's for all Zones, need 33+ for 250 zones and 60+ for PR zones, but only get the Karavan Tp's.

Can a neutral player still get to the Prime Roots (by trekking)?

I am thinking they can because you have to first walk somewhere before you can buy a teleport ticket. So please pardon my ignorance :)
