It takes exactly the same type and quantity of mats to produce both weapons, so no difference in stats. The only difference is cosmetic.

Axes do slashing damage so yes, it does work with axes.

The best mats for a sword or axe (obviously preferable choice, excellent or supreme mats):

Big Shell x8 (Obviously for damage)
Oath Bark x4 (V Good Dam too)
Fiber x4 (Not tested fiber thoroughly myself, tho I tend to prefer buo and Dzao)
Nita Wood Node x4(More hpm, tho the rate isnt massivly noticeable and again I havn't fully explored the options).

Yana Nodes have a DMG bonus I think.
Not sure which Fiber to use though.

For sword/axe? Nope.

As for fiber, any fiber except anete (and some other maybe) will usually do just fine, when looking only the speed.

The Damage bonus is used in the hammer part of the mat, not the counterweight section. Therefore Yana is best for the hammer on maces and not for counterweights
