Welcome.
It is indeed best to finish all the missions on Silan, since they act as a basic tutorial to help you begin to understand how things work.
Be aware, though, that currently there are no similar missions on the mainland. The mainland is much more freedom-centric, less contrived, and less handholding. But, of course, as I'm sure you've discovered already, fellow players are an excellent source of help.

I'm a paying player who is going to finish all of the newbie quests, too. I made an ALT and visited the mainland though. Very impressive.

*To the Original Poster*
Welcome to the Giant RootBall!
As others have said, it is recomended to do all the quests on Silan before heading to Mainland. They teach the basics of the game and how to use the "confusing" Stanza system

It's a giant sandbox so should keep you busy exploring for a while - to fry your brain while you finish the quests on the island check out
http://www.ballisticmystix.net or
http://ryzom.raum.com
It's a good idea to get to know a few of the guilds too
http://forums.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30637 so you know what you are looking for when you get to the mainland.

Welcome
You may want to subscribe BEFORE finishing all the quests.. otherwise the level cap might eat some of your XP
If you do finish the quests first it wont make a lot of difference though, that XP is easily made up as you explore our world

Hrmpf... As much as I appreciate the effort of those who´ve built these sites... And see their usefullness in a pinch, but...
Do you realy think it´s wise to give them to a brand new Player?
I mean, what´s the point in playing and exploring, if everything is allready laid out for you. That´s the same as buying Toomb Raider, it´s "Strategy Guide", sitting down to play and start on the first page of the book... XD
I´ll never understand this? *shakes head*
Sooner or later everyone falls back on these "support Sites", but does it have to be at the very start of things?
I´m SO glad there weren´t any of them when I (we) started playing, seeing you come from way back to.

P.S. And WELCOME to our new resident
