Question regarding Ryzom on Macs

Post by maj7th »

I did a search for "Mac support" and got back non-english results and discussions about Linux. I started Ryzom some months ago, the trial, and my PC died. I since bought an Imac, ATI Radeon 1600 256mb, and dual-core 2.3 processor.

My question is has anyone tested Ryzom on a similar Mac (desktop or notebook) with either boot camp (dual boot) or with parallels or the new vmware fusion emulating windows?

By the way I don't miss windows a bit, just Ryzom.

Darwine for Mac is a possible solution. I do not know of anyone that tried running Ryzom thru Darwine and I have no Mac to test on but theoretically it should run just as well as with Wine on Linux. Also, the dual boot is a possible option. Please let us know of your progress :)

From the Darwine FAQ
What is the targeted audience?

Currently the targeted audience is Developers or Hackers. Users are discouraged from running Darwine because it is still undergoing improvements on Mac OS X, and there is still much to do.

I play Ryzom on the very same Mac under Windows Xp Pro SP2 thanks to Apple Boot Camp and it runs smooth like silk. Virtual machines and wrappers are not the right solution for gaming, IMHO ...

Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista (32 bit) run natively and very well on your iMac.

You can also use commercial virtualizations software like Paralles 3 and VMWare Fusion, they works very well and are rather fast but still not very games-friendly.
Transagaming's CIder is the only wrapper that works pretty well (the "Ciderized" versions of Myst Online and Heroes of Might and Magic V run perfectly under Mac OS X) but it has been developed for publishers and developers, not for end users. Crossover Mac is also intersting ... a few commercial games run pretty well using it.

But Ryzom will probably run better under Windows via Boot Camp ... Installing Windows through Boot Camp is easy, just download and install the last version and run the included wizard. You're going to dedicate at least 40-50 Gb of your hard disk (for Windows, a few useful apps and your games) ... virtual machines don't waste all this disk space (empty space is not saved on the disk images).

There shouldn't be a problem running it with real wine, using this HowTo.

Either install it from source or use MacPorts.

Hope that helps :)
