Hello, another newcomer here

I've never played an MMO before, other than a few persistent worlds of NWN1. But I've been wanting to try one, and Ryzom caught my eye. I've already been on the starter island; it looks and runs great on my little laptop. I'm looking forward to joining in.

The starter guide comic was helpful and I will check out the manual.

Questions:
--If I subscribe, is there a cost for the game download, or is the cost just the monthly fee?
--Does Ryzom play well as solo, or is it mostly group raids?
--(this is is probably explained somewhere but I cant find it) how do you put a spell or skill on a hotkey?

Thanks,
T2

Hey & welcome!

1) Just monthly
2) It's posible most skills except things like Defensive afflictions and heal ofcourse.
3) If you open up the macro windows you can program actions to keys.

Have fun!

A bit confused now... I have a beginner magic mission that requires me to get a level 2 fighting spell. So I built up fighting skill points to about 20 and went to a fight trainer and he had no such spells available.

Hmmm... should I get this fighting spell from the magic trainer (I'm at work now so I can't try that).

The magic mission should ask you to get a lvl 2 magic skill, not a lvl 2 fighting skill. So yes, you should get the appropriate amount of magic points then go see your local magic skill dealer ;)

Thanks, but the mission says something about a fighting spell like cold, level 2. I don't have it in front of me, but I know it says 'fight.'

Could be a minor typo. Cold 2 is indeed a magic spell, and is thus to be found at the magic trainer :)

People, you realy crack me up here. :) :D

It says : "fight spell", yes.
But when did you ever use a "spell" in a swordfight? (until you´ve got an enchanted wapon, that is)
Even Harry Potter doesn´t win his "duells" by whacking his magic-rod over the head of another wizard. No, he casts: combat/fight spells.
He´s fighting" with "spells" ;)

So, yes, it is the magic trainer where you learn magic (and to fight with and by magic)
and the fighter trainer where you learn Swordsplay Action. (to fight with your sword) ;)

Sorry, but this is so cute and funny. No offense meant, but realy....
*LOOOOL* :D

I'm glad you find my question so amusing, but the mission says 'fight spell', so I (quite naturally) assumed it was a spell that provides a temporary enchantment on your weapon, and possibly was offered by the fight trainer.

I guess in Ryzom there are such things as dumb questions.

Keep in mind many things are a translation, it was most likely a bad translation for offensive magic.

Another newb question (loool away, Acridiel):

I can't quite grasp the relationship between my progression in fighting, magic, harvesting and crafting... and the skill points I accrue by doing them.

For example, right now the 'action progression' screen shows me at 12/20 in magic, and the 'p' screen shows me with 7 skill points in magic. I know that skill points increase as I use magic, and that I put these toward better spells. But does the 12/20 determine my magic level, and if so, is that also increasing as I practice magic?

Hope that question make sense.
