BLUE LOBSTER SPARED FROM POT

NEW LONDON, Conn.: A lucky break has spared a lobster from the cooker. The one-and-a-half pound lobster has a rare genetic mutation that makes it bright blue.

Only one in three million lobsters are blue as a result of a genetic mutation.

Two Connecticut men caught it last weekend in one their lobster traps. The Day of New London newspaper reports the men donated it to an aquarium, where it will live out its days in an elementary school classroom for children to learn about.

The lobster joins two other blue lobsters at the aquarium.

There's actually a blue lobster research laboratory in Montauk, Long Island a few miles from me. I got a quick tour one day while I was designing the wastewater treatment facility which was going to serve the building. IIRC, it's is funded by the NY Aquarium and was at one time called the New York Ocean Science Laboratory. Most of the labs buildings are gone now, was just one building left (an old pumphouse) where they were hoesd when I was there. That's prolly where the lobster will wind up....assuming it's even still there.

I remember that one of the reasosn they find the blue ones so interesting is that they grow to a size in just a year that a normal lobster woiuld take like 5 to 7 years.
