Background patcher will not connect:
Here is a solution that has worked in a lot of cases:
close the Ryzom client
press ctrl, alt, delete and choose the processes tab, locate background patcher highlight it and end process.
Click start
click run
type cmd and hit enter
in the dos box that opens type: ipconfig /flushdns
hit enter.
close the cmd page and restart the client
NB. In some cases you may need to do this a few times while the patcher is running.

Any workaround for the old patcher?
Had to reistall Ryzom on this computer, and the client on my other computer haven't been patched since the new patcher came. Both refuse to patch at all.

If you are using the old patcher you will need to add the line:
BackgroundDownloader = 1;
to your client_default config, also check the Startuphost address reads correctly it should read:
StartupHost = "rslogin.juk.shards.nevrax.com:40916";

Here is an explanation about last night/today's issue. There was a maintenance on the network by our provider to improve the connectivity of the servers. This maintenance should have been unnoticable, but during the process around 1:30am GMT, a switch failed and the servers became unreachable. The DNS were changed afterwards, making it difficult to connect to the Ryzom patch servers, which provoked problems launching the game this morning.
Feel free to log into the live-help chat program,
Klients, to speak to a Customer Service Representative if you are having difficulties logging into the game.
