I am gonna give this game a shot after playing many other MMORPG's that just don't amount to much.

No idea what class or build concept to aim for really though I like healing and using shield/swords.

Apparently I can do that if I want and there is no way to really "gimp" yourself if you just do what you like to do with the skill points right?

As far as healing and shields/swords go, they are both very possible.

As for the skill point system, basically every level you earn 10 skill points for that skill type (magic, fight, craft, forage) which you can spend on skills in those areas. There are so many levels in so many different branches (all of which you can take to 250, there is no limit on the number of levels you can have) that you can buy absolutely everything if you have the time to grind out all the required levels to earn the skill points. There is no way to really gimp your toon, though there are a few pieces of good advice that can be given.

Buy the stat upgrades...metabolism + constitution (hp regen and hp), balance + strength (stamina regen and stamina), will + dexterity (focus regen and focus) and wisdom and intelligence (sap regen and sap). Buy these with the SP (skill points) from their respective trees...i.e. HP upgrades with Fight (or magic) focus with forage and sap and stamina with magic and fight respectively.

Increase damage stanzas with Fight are important, as are accurate attack stanzas, and for healing naturally you will want to buy the healing upgrades as you level. I'm sure someone else could explain all this much better and point out some other pitfalls and give some good tips, but it's late and my mind isn't what it could be at a more reasonable hour :p

Nilly gives great advice. :) I would give you one caution. Be careful how you use your crafting skill points. Get the q upgrades first so that you can get good xp from crafting actions. Don't overbuy unnecessary plans until you have enough crafting skill points to spare. Crafting is the only area where you may find a shortage of skill points, or wish that you had spent them differently.

As you've read already, there are no limits here except for your time and amount of skills you want to learn.
Yes, there is almost no way to "gimp" your new Homin that a bit more effort will correct easily.
