Island level cap

Why have one at all? You will eventually stop gaining experience from doing things once your a high enough level. Of course some people will just stay on the newbie island and not subscribe, but there would be far more people who would. What about the people it will attract? It will almost create another game within the game, a free version if you will, if you could actually progress, and not cap out at 20, it would create a whole other world with its own economy.

Ryzom could be free and p2p. The only cap on trial accounts should be that they cannot access the mainland.

And let trial accounts post on the General forum while your at it

Yep. Exactly why there should be a level cap.

Without a level cap...
1. ...Silan becomes populated by freebie-players who occupy server resources with no intention of ever paying. What this game needs is contributing subscribers, not a horde of resource leeches.
2. ...The new-player experience becomes populated by the typically fickle and immature freebie community, which does not present a good impression. This game is known for having a better-than-average community even among p2p MMOs, and having typical freebie fare on Silan is degrading to that.

I'm sorry to be harsh but the ramifications of this concept are certainly negative.

The fact that a game is p2p does not weed out all the immature players(Ex. WoW), that is left up to the game itself. Ask yourself why this game has such a great community. It's because the gameplay does not appeal to someone who is a hardcore raider, or likes getting uber gear.

bottom line is, players who come to Ryzom expecting a wow clone(usually the immature players) will quit, people who the game is built for (mature older rper) will subscribe

Moving this thread to the Newcomer subforum, as it does not pertain to the Ryzom Ring.

There are more types of player than just those two, and Katriell already outlined one for which the level restriction was introduced. What type are you? I'd favour a slightly increased level cap, like 25, then a fairly insignificant first, and limited, subscription for someone who just wants to see a bit more before committing to the very reasonable full monthly subscription.

just subscribe, then there is no level cap. you can stay on Silan as long as you want.

And that is the problem :)

And who pays the server resources and bandwith? Pay accounts are needed for that. So, it's god as it is. Try the game. Then, buy it or left it, if you like or dislike. For that, 20 levels in every skill branch are enough.

In General Section, IMHO, some delicate issues are being aborded. There is needed some experience into the game to be able to fully undertand and aport to that.

Moreover, that stops some people to make alt free acounts to flame and troll in delicate issues.

I think is perfect as it is.

When the level cap on Silan was first introduced, I didn't like the idea... had it been there when I was on Silan myself, I might not have stayed as long, and I really was there a long time before going to the mainland. However, without it, many people will never actually subscribe. They could be better than everyone else on the island with little effort, since everyone else would either quit or go to the mainland.

By introducing a level cap, those players will now have to subscribe, which means they will be able to go to the mainland, which is after all where we want most of the players to be. There is no reason to cater to those who only want a free game where they can be better than everyone else, since they give nothing to the game, neither in game or by paying for it.

However, in my opinion, the cap at level 20 is too low. Getting a character to 20 in all branches on Silan takes no time at all, especially with the xp rewards for mission. I would like to see the cap increased to at least 25, maybe 30. Either that, or the xp rewards for missions removed, since they do not reflect the missions on the mainland. Or both, no xp for missions, and a cap of 25. People need to have enough time to get a taste of what the game has to offer, to get hooked, and currently I think the cap of 20 is reached too quickly, and doesn't allow enough time.

Having the cap works great. If your interested in the game and reached the cap then move on. Silan has alot to offer from the cap lvl to higher lvls like 30 to 40. The net is littered with free games, some decent (IE Silkroad) let those unable to pay and play go there.

I like the mature community. Left the last mmorpg, because of all the children there. I decided to join after about lvl 10.
