What magically perfect game...?

People seem to either love or hate this game. Not much middle ground. For those that hate it, have lost stuff, can't find mats, crashes, whatever.... what magically perfect game have you been playing to think that this game is by comparison so bad? Yeah it's got problems, but I had problems with Everquest from day one and I had BIG problems with Star Wars Galaxies from day one, and then again a year later when I foolishly tried it again. I never played it, but I heard Anarchy Online was basically KNOWN for its bugs, but was still fun to play for many people.
Anyway, not trying to ruffle any feathers or say that this is a perfect game, I'm just trying to understand why people get so livid about it when the games before it have, to my knowledge, done no better. As far as the WoW fan club (I won't use the derogatory slang there, again cause I'm really not trying to make anyone mad) I sure hope they don't have any problems with WoW cause with the hostility in the gaming community we could see developers burned in effigy over it.

Sorry to pull this off topic here, but I hate when people rag on AO. The game did have a bad launch, but most of the problems were quickly fixed and the game was very clean of bugs pre-shadowlands.
Anyway, to answer your question, it's not "one" game that people compare this too anymore, there are tons of games out there and most of them have at least one thing done very well. People will take the best qualities of the games they've played and merge them together in their mind creating the perfect fantasy game, then every time a new game comes out they hope it will fufill their fantasy, when it doesn't they get upset about it and bash the game. Then they look at the next game that's coming out and hope that one will be "the one", and the cycle repeats.
Personally, I enjoy Ryzom, for now it is entertaining me and that's all that matters. I will admit that I am a WoW fanboi and I am looking forward to it with a puddle of drool on my desk, but deep down I know it can only disappoint me because right now I see it as that "perfect game" and honestly, there's no such thing.

It's usually how the MMO community tends to act. There are hardcore gamers, there are casual gamers, and then there are those who are in between. The hardcore gamers will usually point out all the miniscule problems with the game and then claim it will be the downfall of that game. I like to call them the "doom sayers." Then there are the casual gamers who realize what playing a game is all about - playing the darn game. They either enjoy it, or dislike it, and they base their decisons quietly over that.
The people in the middle will usually bring up a few ruckuses in the forums but keep to their playing.
It's all too common to see some immature post saying: "OMG this game !=l337. h0p3 you all like pl4ying 4lone!" in any game.
Of course, if the game is REALLY heading down-hill, it will start to look like

On the technical side of things, FFXI was magically perfect for me... I'm dead serious, notice. Ryzom on the other hand is um... buggy as a Roach Motel. Pretty much I'm going to give it one last go once I get my desktop computer fixed, and if it doesn't run on that one either I'm throwing it out.
As far as concepts go though, Ryzom appears to be A++.

FFXI, to me, was not perfect. I found so many things to be flawed as far as their concept and mechanics went. Stability wise? Sure it was sound. But when it came to concept and design, ewwww! =P

FFXI was out in Japan way before the U.S. launch. I would hope that FFXI was less buggy. Unless you're talking about playing the import upon its launch. Then I retract this if that is the case.

Ok ... my take on things ..
Most of the people who love this game are either crafters or see the potential of this game. I think Ryzom needs a some work, but do not see any major system design issues. The skill system could be fleshed out more to become something truely amazing. The AI seems to be decent. There are still some issues with the AI that will allow for very cheap tactics that could be considered exploits to most people. The crafting system is good, but I will admit I am not much of a crafter. Harvesting needs a overhaul for the eerly stages. I not sure how it would be at higher levels so it is a little early to really say the system needs major work.
I have yet to actually see the RAID system in action so I cannot comment on it. HZ had a system like this .. however it caused unbearable lag while I was still playing. Lag will kill anything
I cant wait to see what the higher level guild mission system will be like. Till that happens I will just keep hope that it will add many new goals to the game. On that topic, it is the high level content that will keep people playing, much of which I do not think is really in the game yet. The one thing that will make this game great is what they do to it from here out. Overall the current state of the game is that it has huge potential.

Stellus, being a hardcore or casual gamer has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's true that the hardcore players will find the problems first tho and will be the first to complain, but to stereotype all hardcore players as whiners and doomsayers is bogus. I fit into the hardcore group myself, yet you will not see me preaching the end of Ryzom any time soon. Likewise many of the whiners may be casual players.
I'm not going to say too much about FFXI except that to me it was the worst MMORPG ever (this is coming from a huge FF fan), but I say this only to point out that everyone has their own tastes and opinions.

I agree completely, 's why I quit. Notice 'On the technical side of things.' =)
