New but Old

Post by draxian2 »

Hi all,

I'm draxian and I played this game during the entire open beta but have not played since, unfortunately.... right.

Anyhow, I tried the free trial last weekend and have just subscribed tonight. I'm not sure how much has changed in the last several years but much is still the same as well. In beta I got to around level 150 to 200 in magic skills and had such a great experience in Ryzom. I always loved the wildlife AI in the game. I became very adept at sneaking around mobs to explore areas that I should not be in. IIRC we were all dumped from the newbie island into Fyros lands (?) desert area. I don't think Matis or the other worlds were created or open yet or something to that effect, as I remember, after growing up a lot, having to make the dangerous and nearly impossible trip through the desert to the Matis lands - and finally I was home!. :)

I also remember when soloing was pretty good before they added the timer to the self heal spells (I think it was a normal spell that could be interrupted with no timer). Was maybe a tad too easy back then but I begged for them not to nerf it so bad. We all know how that goes though. After that, soloing involved a lot of dowtime of sitting to recover. Got pretty frustrating. So knowing all of that and reading that the mobs are possibly harder now and attack in larger numbers I assume that soloing is still as slow-going as it was then? Or all but impossible now? Someone let me know about the soloing possibilities in-game please. (not that I don't like teams, of course. It's just nice to solo sometimes and sometimes it's necessary)

Another question I had to ask of veteran players is about multiclassing. I was interested in making a mage character similar to my old one, you know... nostalgia. :) And someone informed me that you must do melee as well to survive in Ryzom. So I wanted to ask ahead of time for some opinions on that matter. I'd rather stick with magic mostly if it's at all viable.

And many of my memories may be clouded after these several years so feel free to correct any incorrect beta memories that I have. :) Otherwise maybe i'll see you online.

I'm still on the new side to Ryzom but I'm guessing from your description that soloing is much the same as you remember. I tend to solo hunt or hunt with one or two friends so it is definitly possible but alot slower then group hunting .... although I'm on the casual play side and did hear of one guy on cho shooting up the levels solo hunting.

Well I'm not a vet but I think that person was overstating it. Melee is definitly an advantage to have for the health bonuses it can give but you can survive and do well without it. Maybe for PvPer it is more important to have every last health point? *shrug* You'll find the way you have fun and want ot do things :)

hmm only one magic branch can be soloed, and unless you have one of the other 3 higher then your elemental ( the one magic branch you can solo) it will be more or less slow.

For meele, it helps in alot of ways to have a mastered meele skill... just for the hp and MPA (meele protection aura) it is worth it. it isnt to hard to do if you go with a 2 handed weapon and be able to solo a decent amount of it.

Yes, Solo play is quite feasible but, as mentioned quite time consuming. Like many others I enjoy the ability to join with friends and hunt for some needed mats and take the XP as it comes. However, it is nice to also roam off on my own and work my melee skills or my elemental magic too. Just the fact of having this amount of freedom blows the minds of many of our newer homins.
Enjoy!

Draxian, first welcome back to Atys :)
You can solo magic, cast an affliction defensive or offensive and then hit it with elemental for damage. If the target gets close and you know that it's dangerous, cast fear and hope it will flee and give you time to do damage again before it gets close.

Heal on the other side, will not be an option out of team - but I think you already knew that.

PS. remember different mobs have different resists, some even immune to some spells. DS.

Thanks for all the welcomes and information.

After playing again and getting a few levels in fighting I remembered that I did level fighting also on my previous character. It does certainly help with the constitution, magic credits etc. It's all coming back to me slowly now.

Thanks again.
