Radeon 9200 Pro 128MB (game freeze)

I am hoping someone can give me a fix for this problem. I have a Radeon 9200 Pro 128MB on one of my computers. (has a P4 2.8 w/HT and 1GIG of DDR RAM)

Initially I tried playing this game on auto and it kept choosing the D3D mode and as soon as I would get into the game it would freeze and crash the game sometimes even making my computer reboot. (when it would crash in D3D it would give me some message saying my windows graphics driver stopped working and I also made sure I had the most recent drivers and even tried rolling back drivers to no avail) So then I started reading the forums and also spoke to someone on the chat support and was told to change the graphics to openGL which I did successfully. I can now get into the game and even fight a little but my ping goes off the wall and then I freeze soon after. I know none of this is related to bad hardware or anything like that. I play EQ and COH and Lineage2 on it. Considering those factors, there has got to be some setting that I am missing. Can someone help me please? Or are we stuck until Ryzom comes up with a fix for ATI users since this game is so G-Force friendly?

Go to the setup program and select Open GL. Radeon cards seem to have a problem with DX

**editing my post due to my mis-reading of the original poster's hardware**

The Radeon 9200 is not based on the same chip design as the Radeon 9700Pro. Instead the Radeon 9200 is based on the chip design of the much older Radeon 8500 series of cards. These particular Radeon cards *DO* have a problem with running Ryzon under Direct3D and should use OpenGL.

However, the above poster is incorrect in his/her assesment that Radeons have a problem with running DirectX. All of the newer Radeon cards (9500 and higher) were designed *specifically* to be run in DirectX 9 and do no have any problems running Ryzom in DirectX. The lower numbered Radeons (i.e. lower than the 9500) cards are all based on chip designs from the DirectX7/8 era, and for some reason have a problem with Ryzom's handling of DirectX and should use OpenGL instead.

I really don't think this is a problem due to DX9. EQ began using DX9 earlier this year. Initially they had alot of problems, but that was due to programming issues (and was not limited to the Radeon cards - I have a G-Force on my other computer and had the same issues) which they have since fixed and now works beautifully.

Heh, oh how I wish that was true. I get freezes without fail with my 9500. OpenGL only lessens the frequency that i get them.
It is pretty lame that my card seems to run anything under the sun, then WHAM *freeze freeze freeze*. I patiently await a fix of some sort.

Well I am not exactly sure why what I did worked or how but I fixed my problem. I did end up making a Fyros and played fine with no problems. But then I got to talking to some of the other players in the newbie land before I got too far along and they all suggested I try drivers from Omega rather than directly from ATI'S regular website. So, I did this. However when I tried to play after this it told me I was missing some GL file. I tried rolling back my drivers and even uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail, still kept getting the message. At some point I even went into the configuration and clicked off all 4 of those boxes for shading, ect. (my thinking was maybe turn some stuff off so it's not processing so much) Still no luck. Finally I decided to do a system restore and was right back where I started. But thinking to try again since I had checked those boxes off, I tried. Lo' and behold it worked. No lag, no freezing. Till I went LD. I thought it was my computer and realized when I clicked all the boxes I had also clicked to turn texture compression off (I think in doing this it actually makes it work more) so I went to turn it back on and leave the other stuff off and come to find that when I had done the system restore it must of reset those boxes because none of them were checked. So I went back into the game and found my LD was not due to my computer, everyone else had gone LD, too. I played for another hour and a half with no problems. I even went near the Karvan people (some people have posted these have caused problems with crashing too) Wish I knew what solved the problem so others could fix theirs as well. I do wonder though if being in newbie land or the mainland has anything to do with it. (This all done in OpenGL btw.)
