Mage skill questions

I have something ive been wondering about with the Mage skill tree... I have Heal3 right now and wish to get Heal4, but it is not yet available from the Trainer, but the Heal upgrade is. I have the stanzas to be able to cast Heal4 right now no worries.
My question is, when I'm high enough level for the Heal4 to come up in the trainers window, will it allow me to skip training that ( as I already Heal4 as an upgrade ) so I can just simply wait for heal5, or will heal5 be forever unavailable until I train in Heal4.
If this is the case, then the upgrades seem to be kind of a waste of time.
