free ryzom?

So everyone seems to have lots of thoughts about various aspects of the liquidation all mixed up and spread out over different threads. I was just wondering, with Xavier's 'free ryzom campaign' popping up again and again who was for, against and undecided?

Personally I dont like the idea, as it sounds as though even if it keeps ryzom playable the game will be tinkered with, much altered, argued over and transformed into something very different to the Ryzom I know and love.
I worry about who will have the rights to the avatars, server size and number of servers, cheats (due to database being accessible by players), altered customer service, the migration of the 'free to play community', and I am very dubious about the possibility of future development if Ryzom becomes a community project - in essence possibly leaderless and directionless.

*takes a deep breath* anyway, just skimming through my thoughts, please discuss and vote :)

She said she had hired a contractor to remove the buggy code that had been poorly written and was going to replace it with more a more generic code base that would make adding all the rites easier.

It reminds me of the developer that spent 6 months working on new animations that the 'management' didn't know about and we ended up voting on which should be added. If I remember right they jigged around with that vote to get at least some of them in.

I don't think it's the best, but I'd take it as a last option wholeheartedly under either of these circumstances:
  • Ryzom would otherwise be bought by company like SOE
  • Ryzom would otherwise cease to exist

They did not "jig around with the vote." They set up more specific polls so we could get what we wanted and not what we didn't want out of the animations. The original "all or nothing" vote was so close that it was, I believe, very much warranted to do a second that would allow more specific options and opinions to be given. It was a good thing, and I don't understand the people who referred to it as a vaguely foul action.

If no one that is actualy a company (yes that includes sony they are a gaming company) buys it then I see no reason why someone can't buy it and make it open source; however as a first choice it sucks. So i voted a big and resounding NO. I see the purchase of the code by a group of interested players to be a last and final resort before it goes in the trash heap. I dont consider it a viable option for actualy keeping the game going and running at a high standard of games that people pay to play.

Undecided, not enough info. Need to know more details on the alternative first. EG who is the competition for the buyout. Its better than a full wipe of the entire game, but not better than a decent company buying Nevrax out and making a decent job of it. (Preferably keeping as many of the original Nevrax staff as possible).

yeah, I think that just about everyone is thinking along these lines. Without any other information I cant really make a decision so i wont vote. In a perfect world a kick ass gaming company would take it on, having millions of dollars and a huge development team, but we wont know what happens unti it happens. As far as thats the case, im prepared to pledge, and have done, incase eveyrthing else falls through. Its a safety net imho.
