I didn't see a "new players hi thread" so i thought I'd just post along and see what happens.

Well, Hello everyone, I'm new to Ryzom, and I am what some people call "Gaming freaks" I've played almost every mmo out there :S and yet none has been able to tame me *chuckle*.

But from what i can tell Ryzom is a game that really speaks out to me, with a detailed crafting system, awesome community and from what I've seen you have small pockets of sci-fi content? I don't suppose you guys have mechs too, do you? eek.

Anyway, I was greeted by a GM when i first started playing, he was polite and really helpful, although i cant remember his nick (I'm horrible with names) I'm sure he knows who he is.

Back to the game. I've also seen a lot of commotion about crafters being in high demand (mentioned from the GM i talked to) And that only makes me more happy, cause i thrive of crafting systems. a few questions though.
1: Is there a bank system where i can shove all my spare mats and parts?
2: Can i get far in this game by being a crafter/harvester only?
3: Is magic just as powerful as most other games?

*cough*

Seeing as I've already typed out a lot, I'll say goodbye and wait for replies.

So take care and I hope to see you all on newbie island.
Cheers!

1. Yes, there is storage in the form of packers, apartments and guildhalls. Also one can also sell up to 128 items at once on the market - by putting a huge markup, up to 9999%, you can be relatively sure that no one will buy and then retrieve them later.

2. Yes, crafters are much in demand. However, it can be difficult to survive the more hazardous high level digging areas without high combat levels. High melee levels also will help in surviving explosions and other foraging mishaps.

3. Yes, magic is very powerful, although melee certainly comparable in usefulness.

Welcome to Ryzom! :D

You will find a lot of great people here. I'm just starting myself, finishing the last couple of quests in the starting area (Ruins of Silan) but my impression is very positive. I too have played a lot of other MMOs and this has the advantage of being very "different!"

I have noticed that sometimes someone on the Support staff is hovering around Chiang's tower, that's cool and a good idea. Also frequently some will be in the Universe chat channel, which is a non-rp chat tab mainly for questions about the game. (Region specific requests like grouping for a quest are best left for the Region tab.) "Around" is vicinity (or "say") and User is all of the previous on one tab, so you would have to choose which channel to speak in. The System tab is all the game messages and I have found it useful to have it as a separate window as the info is sometimes useful during various activities.

No mechs ;) as far as I know. One of the 2 large "powers" in the world, the Karavan, are techy (and balanced against the nature spirit Kami,) giving the world a feel of a mix of tech and magic. There are guns and other projectile weapons but you don't get access to Range combat until you upgrade to a paid account and leave the starting island for the mainland.

1. No bank. On the starting area, you are limited to your personal "bag" (inventory) which actually holds a lot of stuff. Once on paying account and on the mainland, my understanding is that you can store things on Packers (Mektoub Packers like Chiang is standing next to) which you can own up to 3, and either leave stabled or take with you; Mounts, and eventually you can buy an Apartment. These are the storage methods in the game. I hear the Packers hold quite a bit (which would be a good thing, for especially when harvesting and crafting you can end up with a lot of non-stacking components of different quality levels.) My understanding is that what you can carry is limited by the number of stacks (slots,) total weight, and total bulk. Hard to really keep track of until you get the "bag is full" message. And yes, crafting is great here. Virtually everything is harvested and crafted.

2. You could I suppose. Some level of fighting and magic would be advised so you can harvest in dangerous areas and defend yourself from aggro. You could just craft from buying materials but it would be expensive. Materials can come from both prospecting/harvesting and from animal parts/drops.

Nice thing here about the skills system is that as the 4 main tracks split and split again, there are reportedly enough levels to gain to be able to train in every skill in the game with skillpoints left over. So there is no restriction on having to choose to be a "crafter" and you will be locked out or unable to develop other skills.

3. Magic and Fighting branches are very robust. Add to that the fact that the Actions you buy in any skill branch are made up of Stanzas (component parts) which you can edit and recombine to create custom Actions, you can be a Mage with spells customized to your chosen style or that no other Mage might have thought to try.

In general terms, for every helpful Stanza you add to an Action, it has a cost. In order for an Action to be learnable you must balance the cost with "credits." For example, you might add a Stanza to make your Acid Damage spell do more damage....but to save the changes, you will have to make sure the credits are enough to balance the costs, say by adding a Stanza that makes the spell take longer to cast, use more Sap ("mana") or has a lower range. You can add whatever effects you know to any Action, as long as you can balance it out so you can save ("learn") it.

If you haven't already, read the pdf guide to the starting area and check out the sticky topics at the top of this Welcome forum, many useful links.

Play around and have fun!

(EDIT: oh and the best way to learn is to do the quest series for the 4 trainers in the Ranger camp. You will pretty much end up with close to 20 levels in all 4 branches (you can't advance to 21 on a trial account) and will be taught the basic methods both of doing these activities and even how to customize actions. Some things are hard to explain until you try to do them and see how they work.)

Welcome aboard and I hope you enjoy your time and decide to stick with us :)

Incase you havent noticed yet, you can be anything and everything in Ryzom !
Crafter, Harvester, Fighter, Magician!

and about your question about getting somewhere as harvester/forager, fighters/magician wouldnt have their nice gear if it werent for them :)

storing 1) packers (you can own 3) , 2) appartment, 3) Guild Headquarters

the game is balanced yes, since everyone can own anything anyone has , and anyone can have every single skill :)

it is recommended to train in some fighting skill to gain constitution for added hps, and some defensive skills(magic) for more parry and dodge etc, perhpas some veteran players can elaborate since im new myself!

See you ingame!

Thanks a lot Gretchen, Riveit, and Malabdul, I must say your answers really inspired me to hop in the game and get playing.

So far i really enjoy the class freedom, being a made that can still 2hit kill anything with my mage amps.

And being able to make a full suit of light armor with either HP +5 or Sap+ 5 is always nifty.

Although, I'm getting the feeling the low level crafters are going to have to make huge bulks of armor and weapons, and just sell them to the NCP, seeing as there is such a wide variety of item types. Are there really people out there that need that certain type of armor that are willing to pay money for? that cant already make it them selves?

At higher levels, almost no one makes their own equipment. Crafters become known for their work, i.e. Sehraci for medium armor, Therowan for heavy armor, Numaa for jewelry (these are off the top of my head)...
