Every time I die, the game freezes.

When I die, the game freezes. I have to turn off the computer at the power source to get it to do anything. I have no idea why this happens: any help?

Could be locking up due to sound when the death music starts. Try disabling sound as a start.
Try windowed mode instead of full screen. Some find that that works better. Which leads to the last idea...redoing your video drivers.
If the problems persist then you may want to look into cleanly reinstalling your video drivers. (Remove via control panel add/remove programs, reboot, ignore found hardware messages, reinstall video drivers.)

I disbaled the sound, but the problem persists. Actually, after dying again I have realised that the problem isn't that the game freezes when I die; it's that the game freezes when I press the respawn button. Could this have a different cause?

Make sure the UDP ports are open/triggered as per the network FAQ.
Also make sure that you have adequate paging file set aside. For 512 MB of RAM make sure to have 1.5 GB of paging minimum.
And making sure video drivers are cleanly installed nerver hurts.

Don't turn off your computer like that. Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and closing Ryzom using task manager. You'll save yourself some Windows crashes caused by your way of turning the computer of.
I have the very same problem as you - the game hangs when I hit respawn, but it does not happen every time.
I asked about that, but my thread got closed (probably because I also discussed some Ryzom makers policy about trial version limitations and about minimum system requirements and game stability - I'm not sure because only answer from game/forum admins was when they closed the thread).
I hope you'll manage to find a workaround for your problems because the game idea is quite nice.
