Technology in Ryzom?

Hi!

I just got the game today but didn't get to play it very much, got my new computer today also so i'm going to have to re-install the game. Anyways, my question is if there's any advanced tech in Ryzom. The Caravan seems to have a lot of that but is that tech something I can get as a player at some stage? Is the tech perhaps a faction "thing"?
And by tech i mean guns and other mechanical/advanced gear =)

There are guns - including pistols and rifles as well as some "launchers" that I think do splash/area damage. High tech is probably not the right word here, as they, like everthing else, looks like something that has been stitched together from wood and other natural sources (well, no metal on the planet - so that is a given really).
Of course I guess something made of wood can still be "high tech".

Most people however, I think agrees that ranged weapons needs a whole lot of adjustments - especially to ammo and the cost of this. At the moment you can fire off a small fortune or several hours spent harvesting materials in what seems like a few minutes.

But the option is there to use guns. Let us hope it will become more viable in the future.

No, the Karavans are the only ones with that type of technology. Maybe when Ryzom progresses onto it's further stages might we have some, but for now it's all natural materials.

Ah, ok, thanks for enlightening me =)
Looks like I'll have to stick to fighting with blades and sticks for a while then. But I'll have to investigate the Karavan, they look like a really interesting faction. I mean...what's not to love with a faction that: "...are masters of an unknown technology with devastating powers"??!! =D

Guns is a nice way to start a fight with a tuff monster, u can cast fear use a gun and after switch to a sword for a close combat, it also gives a wonderful prospect for role playing and adds sophistication... After a while of playing I started thinking that developers made guns exactly for this purpose of opening the fight?

Switching weapons during a fight can be a bit cumbersome in my opinion - especially if you are dual wielding.
And if the mobs insta-jumps to you like the kipees seem to do for me on the newbie islands I have been to (while having no indications of lag or high ping times), you might have to hurry up the switching a bit too :) - at least if you are fighting monsters at a level where you cannot really afford to miss out on even a few hits.
Or is it possible to set up a macro for weapon switching? I have not really tried out the in-game macro system yet.

true, but the kamis are much cuter, not the sentinel version that is :P
