Character Creation: Reality vs Teaser Video

I find the discrepencies between the character creation scheme I saw in a teaser video on Ryzom's main site (under multimedia) and what I experience when playing the game.

The entire interface had changed.
Could no longer choose skin color.
Whole different set of much more general "careers".
Clothes(!).

I had to wonder if this new scheme I was experiencing was due to the trial I am on, or if the teaser was just beta/pre-beta and they changed all that before original release?

If so, that's a shame. I liked the old interface... and skin colors. Especially the skin colors.

I can promise the character creation scheme changend only in one point since at least january 2005, and that is the selection of the action packs. In the old version you started with three packs out on offer of four packs, now you get four fixed packs, and an additional to choose. There are no "careers" anymore. everyone can learn skill in every branch of every skill tree up to the maximum possible.

So what you saw is from Beta I guess. But I agree, skin colors would be cool ;)

We Matisians demand skin colour! Any colour will do, we're feeling a bit colourless ;)

Is a link to the video would be nice. Was the original intentions really a career based (read class based) system?

Obviosly NOT, one of the really innovative aspects of SoR is it NOT to be class based.
Within 8 years RL-time you should be able to get up to level 250 in each of the skill trees... that was the idea :-)

I played in Beta from May 2004. At no point since I started could you ever choose skin colour. It's based on your race.

Perhaps Dark Matis was a playable race before the betas? Oh, how I hope the Saga will continue!

Uhm, y´know it´s almost 4 years since this trailer was released? I think I know wich one you mean but its even pre-Beta.
Year 2003... (This one Medium size 23mb)
So sorry, but I´m convinced that there´s not a single Game out there in wich the initial UI, GAmeplay, or whatever Design survived until release without any change at all.
And in this trailer there´s no Skin-color change, just Tatoos like we have now still. :p Clothes yes, but I´m certain that almost all of us think it´s better the way it is now. ;)

I don't remember a build that let us actually choose a class... but I think it was out there (talked about, but unseen AFAIK) with racial bonuses in the "if we can before release" list. Now like many of those type things it'd be almost impossible to balance and implement.

Even with a "test" server, it's really hard to do balance tests, during FBT you'd have teams that would literally do the same things over and over again. I still remember standing in the same PR dig spot and prospecting every 35 seconds for one Atys day [84 minutes] in order to help get better messages on why a source wasn't available "at the moment"... I wish I still had that much patience, these tests are harder to do now obviously.

The list of things from creation to implementation has changed... it doesn't make what we have any better or worse for it. Some things that wouldn't need balancing (like the guild web interface) would be nice to see but I am trying to keep the "half-full" attitude these days... that old stuff had promise, but enjoying what we have should be the most important issue.
