New player experience is frustrating...

It was dark, and raining, and the nice chap on the hill told me to explore the place and find some jobs so I explored.
I wandered about for 15 minutes and couldn't find this fighter job I wanted, so I tried hitting something - and died more than once. I asked for help and had the usual "lrn2play" responses or "go play wow" being another typical one. Even the more 'mature' responses were along the lines of "some people just want everything handed to them..."
A couple of people did offer advice and after an hour I had managed to finish 2 quests... an hour? *coughs*
When I mentioned that the intro was not very newbie friendly the above responses were repeated in case I missed them earlier. The island community seems to be populated by fanbois *laughs* There is a problem with the new player intro, it needs to be more 'user friendly', but since the guys on the island are in denial I guess it won't happen. Apparently if you can't cope you should quit immediately and go play something else.
I've played almost every MMO out there and still have active accounts in 3 of them (I have a lot of spare time..) so I do have a clue how to play. Thanks for asking...
The new player experience needs some better way of finding people. Exploring is nice once you know what you're doing, but not that good if someone gets frustrated for 30 minutes and then logs never to return is it? A waypoint system maybe? A glowing light over the person you need would help? Anything, just throw us a bone for that first hour eh?

Silan is infinitely easier and more player friendly than the old island.
Which server are you on by the way?
Your experience with the community is atypical and the responses you've gotten would likely only come to someone who was aggressively complaining.
The island is just a tutorial, questing isn't Ryzom's mode of play. Were you asking in region or Universe chat?

umm the new player island is extremely user friendly. If you cant find the 4 quest givers on your own then maybe Ryzom isnt going to be the game for you - once you reach the mainland you really are on your own.
taking the missions will explain everything you have to do. the melee and magic ones guide you to kill suckling yubo's (which are the weakest mobs there), explain how to attack, what to train from the guys standing next to them, i dont understand how it could be made any easier or more obvious?
i'm sorry you dont like people who enjoy the game - fanboys - cause i am another one.

"Go play WoW" is really a bad answer and I'm sorry for your experience. Anyone who downloaded 1.5gb of Ryzom didn't do it to play WoW. Ryzom players have a reputation of being helpful, is it not so on the isle?
However I tried SWG trial recently and the waypoint system there was really horrible. There was no sense of discovery, in my opinion. Personally I would hate such a system here.

Greetings, My name is Suryi...and I'd like to help you. As I myself am still new to the island...perhaps I can give you a bit of guidance.
1) What server are you on? I am on Aristotle
2) What time zone? I am on Central time and usually can be found after 6pm my time.
YOU can send me private messages of any questions, or obstacles you are having...and perhaps I can guide you a bit in the right direction. Just remember to read everything that people tell you as they will usually give you a general idea as to where you need to be. Also there are 4 trainers in addition to Chiang spread about the camp...you may wish to find them, and they will have odd jobs for you as well. I will admit that it is a different play-styles as such games as WoW, EQ2, and DDO. And yes, I've played all three as well. The greatest asset of Ryzom is it community, and I'm a bit confused as to the responses you received, as it is very out of sorts for them. Hopefully you will see that once you get to know us all better.

Wow-that is exactly OPPOSITE of the experience I have had on newbie island. Folks have been very friendly, I had a half dozen different indviduals agree to open private convo's with me and answer dozens of questions.
I have almost NEVER had a question not answered when i asked in /region or /universe and I have yet to see any leet-speak, or WOW type nonsense in chat.
So far Ryzom has been the best newbie experience of my MMO career. I signed up for a paying account last night.
My experience is on the Cho server.

I'm also finding that odd. I just left the newbie island about 2-3 weeks ago and had a great time there. It's one of the best tutorials to a game I've ever experienced-and I've also played WoW, SWG, EVE, etc. The community when I was there was great and my questions were always answered. This was on the Arispotle server, so if you're on another server maybe you got in with a bad crowd of newbies that just transferred over from WoW or something.
If you have specific questions about gameplay feel free to ask in Universe chat. That's what it's there for. I often chime in with answers that I know, particularly as they relate to the newbie island since I spent almost a month there. If you're looking for a group, though, better to ask in Region chat.
Don't give up though, based on one or two game sessions. The community really is great and I've honestly never once seen answers like you got, so I think you just had a full moon or something, lol.

As I said, it was dark -and- raining and very confusing when you've never been to a place before. Just a clue would have done, stand a shiny torch next to them or something for dark nights
I think it was Arispotle (English and not Cho, that much I'm sure of) and I wasn't the only one asking questions and seemingly unable to figure out what was going on. Like I said, Exploration is fun, Frustration isn't...
