No classes. No difference between races except in starting fame and racial spell protection (Each race gets 20% protection for a race-specific spell type.)

Classes? What Classes?
Are we playing the same Game? Oô
The SKill System is completely open, you don´t have to choose a set path.
You may be a Nukeing-swordwielding-enchanting-digger-crafter, if you want to.
Just do and be it

Bring patience, fun and forget how to "grind" and then you should be allright.
Your Game is what you make of it

the mechanical difference between the races are trivial, and not worth worrying about, It really does come down to the Lore and your aesthetics..
As for picking how to start your character, again there is very little difference as you can follow any path within the game irrespective of how or where you start (but I personally tend to start a new toon with the crafter kit.. for my style of play it has some advantage

)

I will add though that, technically, you could be focused solely on harvesting/crafting or just magic, or just melee, it really is better to try to keep a well-rounded approach to the game. The first time I played, I tried to level up just as a magician. I had the same thought as you that I needed to be a "class". That was a miserable failure, as I ended up dying a lot.
This time around I've gone up the magic and melee trees pretty much equally and have a much higher survival rate. As for harvesting/crafting, those are the money making endeavours and for some, including me, they are just fun things to do to take a break from the fighting.

As said before there are no classes and before you ask it seems there are more skill points than are needed so don't worry about gimping your toon! Choosing the wrong skill will only slow ya down a bit but it is easily over come. The only paths I would say to watch carefully when spending skill points are crafting and harvesting because they both use focus points but use the sp from harvesting to up your focus and only use your sp in crafting for plans and boosts at early lvls cause they get really tight!
As for what race to playthat is for you to decide cause there are only minor resistance difference! I would suggest reading the lore and desciding from there!
Once in game if you need help just ask and you will get inundated with answers and or offers to group up! Just don't be shy!!!!

If I'm in game and you are Matis or ask me to come to any lands I'd be happy to except Tryker lands cause I haven't trekked there yet

I still think you should be a ranger. I think these other people just don't feel like picking a class.

I suggest start as warrior and build up your HP, then you can take that extra HP and use it to help against aggro and in spell stanzas if you decide on a Mage profession.
Choose a kami race because everytime a karavan is created, god kills a monkey
