Just to observe. First day I used bit torrent to down load files. Took over 3 hours. Then it took over 8 hours to get the patches to download as the connection kept stopping. (note I play other online games and this hasn''t happened before) Then i kept loosing connection.while playing, about every 15 seconds. So I read and configured the firewall for permissions. Then I kept getting dropped but the game stayed open. The result was a 15 second to minute pause in play while the game reestablished connection every 3 to 5 minutes.

Today, my second day, the new patches took only about40 minutes for 24 mb(yesterdays was 31 mb) and now the server is offline.

i have an up to date computer with a cable connection. Is this typical of this game? this is not a good example for my trial peroid

o_O ...No. The series of problems you describe strikes me as rather odd.

The server was down for about an hour ending just about when you posted this. We do a maintenance reboot every 3-4 days.
The daily patches are for the new Ring update as per the main web page http://www.ryzom.com/news

Make sure that you have all of the ports triggered/forwarded/opened as per the Networking FAQ to ensure smooth network performance

Just to keep you up to date. I configured windows firewall and the router firewall like it says on the posts to no avail. I can watch the connection get lost. Packets go missing. then it goes probe and reconnects. It isn't my server so it must be a server between the host server and myself. It is a data jam that is causing the crash. It espiecally happens when in a fight. when it reconnects I am dead becasue I have done nothing(well I am not connected so I cannot do anything)

There is no solution I guess. Oh well onto another game...a bit depressing though

Try doing a traceroute (tracert <adress>) and a pathping (pathping <adress>, takes a while) afterwards.
Until yesterday I had two days trouble with packetloss as well, pipex.net had problems with from where I wanted to connect and presented me with a nifty 10% PL - which is enough to give your client heavy hickups... Nothing Nevrax or Jolt are responsible for, btw.

I would echo this and stress that if you are playing from North America, the culprit is quite often Telia, with major delays or packet loss. PingPlot is a good utility to track this also.
