My suggestion (easy to suggest when one is not doing the work...) if we assume that you may not have a horde of web developers

would be an approach where the fan-site specializes in a concrete aspect. From a selfish, customer, viewer point of view :*) , I would rather have single websites that are awesome resources in a particular field, rather than overlapping "yet another mat resource database" (sorry if I sound harsh, not my intention, of course it's your work and your call) and avoid without having lots of similar, redundant web sites.
In this sense, imho, a given fansite could be:
* a good resource for Ryzom artwork (e.g. Acridiel's one)
* a good resource for new players helpful information (e.g. Melinoe, etc.)
* a good resource for minmaxing (mobs resistance, craft formulas, harvesting formulas, XP calculators, etc.)
* a good resource for specialization (e.g. final web on ranged fighting, tips and tricks)
A new fansite would need to find it's "niche" (e.g. imagine doing something like Raku / Oshi dressroom if it not existed), and grow if appropriate. In other words, if one can evaluate the effort it takes to create and mantain a fansite, is it better to be a jack of all trades or to excel in one aspect? Of course, it is possible to have a fansite with lots of information e.g. Ballistic is an awesome resource for : NPC finder, mat database, map locations, etc. but also the work involved is huge, and the skills required too...
A few suggestions (in no particular order, and not implying preference for any, use-it-at-your-own-risk-will)
- Compedium of FAQs and guides for new players, answering the most common questions asked in Universe chat.
- Detailed gameplay aspects and numerical minmaxing: resistances, craft xp calculation, harvest xp calculation, harvesting options and so on), precraft and post-craft values and calculations,
- Compedium of craft recipees (100/100 weapons, 97 amps, +2 dodge LAs, +3 parry HAs.
- Leveling guides (why not, some players may want them)
- Screenshots of Atysian items, weapons,
