Constant Freezing...

I haven't had any problems with this game up until now, I spent around 30 hours on the Matis starter island playing 2 different characters, only had one freeze. Yesterday I thought it was time to move one of them to the main land, I talked to the Karavan person, got teleported there and loaded up at the spawn point, all seemed fine, I went to turn and move and as soon as I started turning my computer froze. (Froze as in total PC lock up, had to do a hard reboot) Thought it was just a random freeze so restarted my computer and reloaded the game, froze again. Tried again this time turning the other way, it worked and I managed to run around for a bit, but withen 5 minutes I froze yet again in a different spot. I can't play this character anymore, I've been changing settings and trying to avoid the areas I froze at, but I can't go into the Matis city without freezing at some point. Outside it's OK, haven't froze yet, just inside the city I get problems. Usually when my camera turns towards the spawn point area I freeze, not everytime tho, it seems almost random.

ATI Radeon 9000, 64mb - latest drivers
AMD Athlon XP 2200+
Windows XP home - fully updated
Latest version of DirectX (9c I think it is)

I've tried lowering settings, switching to open GL, windowed, full screened, nothing works. For now I'm starting a new character, I'd like to play this one again at some point tho.

I have a friend who has almost identical system specs as you and he was getting the constant freezes and lockups. He fixed the problem with mainly the Open GL change. I believe he also had texture compression off (or checked I guess it is) and I think he was in 1024 and he might have also had the 2 boxes under texture compression checked as well.

He did update his drivers once again for the latest Catalyst drivers also.

So I would recommend that as well. The set the other settings and try it again.

It's the ATI card. SoR, currently, doesn't like them.

I also am having a very similar problem. I originally was able to play for hours with only the server lag. ( which is kinda funny as I rubberband around) But it seems that after the patch on I think Tues the 5th, that this started happening. I was playing for awhile, maybe 2 hrs. and then my system froze-completely locked up. I had to reboot....ran defrag etc. shut down all other programs tried again, and it locks right after my main toon enters the game. I deleted the chars files in the save directory as the GM suggested. this did help her load up---for about 4 min then it locked again. when I can even get back to the desktop I am getting an ATI error. Oddly I can load my other toon and play her for hours, chance?
I did switch my card to openGL with no change.
However I also have turned the Ryzom graphic settings way down and was able to play my second toon. I still get nervous tryin to load my main. I did see though for that sec before freeze---It looked like snow! are there seasons? =)

Ya it snowed in the Matis lands, I take it your character that locked is Matis then? Are your other characters also Matis? It may be a racial problem, I played all day on a Fyros character and had no problems, I actually bypassed my "broken" character in levels so I might just delete her.

tekkor, thanks for the tips, however OpenGL is also bugged for me and the game wont play in fullscreen while using it. I hate playing game's in windowed mode. =P

Yes, she is Matis. My char I can play is Fyros. I also made a little Tryker to see if she'd load, she will not either.

I've been having trouble all day... now I can't even take two steps. Never a problem until today... my only thoughts are that it could be todays patch... but that is simply as it is the only thing that has changed... right?

Then I must agree, after today's patch, the lag problem seems resolved, but now after a painfull humiliating death, whenever I spawn into town, yrkanis mainly, I am frozen. That's why I am here, I'm in between freezes, and it takes me so long to load back up. So if I was a Tech support guy, I would say,

Ok, it seems after a long clinical look at your problem, it is my strongest recommendation that you NEVER DIE AGAIN! And the problem is gone

I don't think it is the computer though. I have my NET window up all the time, and when this problem happens the ping is at 14k on entry, and the up and downloads are rapidly flick between the same numbers.

Not sure how to approach this one.

btw Zephyr I love your avatar, isn't she a char from ChronoCross?

I'd suggest running the Configuration tool and under the display options make sure you're running in OpenGL rather than Direct3D. That might resolve some of the issues you've been experiencing.

Don't mean to harp on you, you being a GM and all, but did even you read my posts? I've stated twice that I have tried OpenGL and it does not fix the problem, it actually creates new problems such as the game not running in full screen.

I played all day on my Fyros without a single lock up. So I think there's something wrong with Matis, or Karavan even since Matis and Tryker are with Karavan (I think) and those are the races people have problems with. Come to think of it, all the places I've locked-up near, that I remember, were right by a Karavan ship. There's one parked right near the Matis spawn point I was having so many problems with....
