Is there some kind of milestone that I should be looking for to go to the main land. Like x level fighter or mage. Thank you all for your help.

Simplest answer: At whatever point you feel comfortable with the interface and feel you've exhausted the fun potential of the Ruins of Silan zone (because you can't go back).
The 2nd half of that sentence is optional because you can create a new toon later to just explore more of RoS. So really, it's all about feeling comfortable with the game and it's interface.

I generally advise going to the mainland when've you've completed all the missions on Silan and are bored with what's left to do there

A good recommendation indeed.
I finished a buch of mission "sets" to get the rewards so I wouldn't end up on the mainland with low level skills, naked, and unarmed. After getting to the mainland, I was glad I did. I could have made due without, but it certainly made things a little less difficult.
Mainland is pretty wild though... having a blast there.

Well, you need to upgrade your account to "paid", which can be done easily by clicking the "profile" link in the email you received with your "secure password".
Once you do that, speak to Chiang the Strong on the trial island. He will guide you through the rest of the process.
If you see me running around on the mainland, be sure to wave!

I am of the opinion that you should stay on the island for as long as conceivably possible because once you get to the mainland it is not as easy. The game appears quest-based in the beginning, but that is only for tutorial purposes. It is not a quest-based game, it requires a lot of time grinding really, but it isn't about leveling so grinding isnt required honestly. You level your skills as you hang out with your guild and such. Regardless I think it is wise to stay on the island until your skills have reached (at least) lv. 50 each.
Good luck to you, meet you on the mainland someday! (Still working on the Island).

Getting combat to lvl 50 on Silan is an absolute chore. The mobs aren't high enough level to really do it without making it a horrid low XP grind. What takes you three hours on Silan might only be a half hour on the mainland.
If you want to try it, go ahead. But it's not worth the grind, in my opinion.

Agreed!! Don't set level goals for Silan. Explore, get the feel of the game, do the quests for as long as they interest you, and then move to the mainland. You can thrive and survive as a level 1 on the mainland, so just level is no reason to stay on the island. The only reason to stay is if you are still having fun there.
