What's the point

Greetings,

I just arrived to the mainland and I have to ask, what is the point of the game. I have done the same quests over and over again and am getting bored of it already. The game started of good, you completed quests and got rewards on the newbie island but the mainland is totally different.

The game is not quest-based. The "quests" on the starting island were purely for tutorial. Missions on the mainland are merely for fame (tribe, race, faction) and a few dapper (in some cases).

You choose your own direction, goals, and point. :)

And no, that is not "a nice way of saying there is a lack of content." It's saying that content is player-driven, which is a good thing IMO. Some people say the only alternative to questing is grinding, or that Ryzom is just a massive grind, but that is only true if they can't think of anything to do but grind levels or chew through spoon-fed quests. It's not for everyone.

Also, note the name of the game...The Saga of Ryzom. In essence, the point of the game is to participate in the saga, and this is accentuated by the lack of traditional quests. Quests are replaced by frequent live events. The name is being changed to simply "Ryzom," but what I just said remains true. :)

So the game is a big grind. If you want to increase your weapon use you have to fight alot of monster, if you want to increase your weapon building skills you have kill monsters or dig for mats. There doesn't seem to be anything else to do.

I payed for 3 months so I will continue playing, hopefully it gets better.

Larsa wrote:You write about "play and advance" and that's exactly why you might not like Ryzom: if you play Ryzom with the main objective to advance your character then you won't like the game and you'll probably complain about the "mindless grinding" in the game and the "lack of content" very soon. The main objective of a game like Ryzom (frequently called a sandbox-type of game) is not to advance your character but to live in this beautiful, living alien world (being part of the community, role-play, explore, follow and influence the story). The fact that your character advances along the way while you're playing the game is merely a bonus - but it's not the main objective.
^ A well-written post from someone on MMORPG.com about the subject.

Let me say again...it's only "a big grind" if that is what you make of it. :) It's not the game's fault if you choose to do nothing but grind.

What can I do besides grind? Tell me anything and I will do it.

Besides grinding you can:
  1. Explore the world of Atys
  2. Form a guild
  3. or join a guild
  4. Try to take over and hold possession of Outposts (PVP)
  5. Build a crafting business
  6. Roleplay with other players
  7. Participate in GMed events
Now... it's certainly possible that doing those things does not appeal to you, but that is what SOR is designed to be in terms of gameplay. It's a sandbox game. In such games, you make your own content. It is not provided for you by the game designers. That's not a design flaw; it's on purpose.

In addition, soon (tm) the Ryzom Ring will be released, which will let you design and run your own GMed adventures, or play in those designed by others. Here again, the game devs give us the tools, and WE make the content.

Now, if you were to complain that this is all not very well explained in the tutorial and as a result it is a bit confusing and it misled you a bit, I would not disagree. They need to clarify this much more in the tutorial. However, the information that this is not a quest based game is all over the internet, including in multiple spots on MMORPG.COM (reviews, forum posts), and on this very forum. As a consumer, it's really up to you to be informed before you make a purchase.

There are the encyclopaedia quests too, which might be more appealing to someone who is more quest oriented.

When I choose not to grind I cannot explore the world very far and I cannot set up a crafting business. People tell me not to do quest, since they are broken anyway (?). So I sit around and do nothing. Time passes and nothing happens. Out of boredom I start grinding. Now please tell me where is the fun in this game? What can I do that gives grinding a purpose? Do I grind to level up so I can grind some more? I joined a guild, did a trek, did see some parts of the world, but all everybody is doing besides that is grinding. Where is the lore, the unraveling of story lines, the feeling of that it matters what you do?
