A melee combat question

I get stunned a lot by kipees which results in quite a few deaths. How can I improve my character's defences to lessen the amount of stuns I receive? I'm wearing mostly NPC-created matis heavy armor.

The stun is a side effect of a special melee attack the kipee uses. The only way to avoid it is to dodge/parry the attack. So you can work on imporoving your dodge/parry value, but you'll always get hit some and therefore always get stunned some.
Kipee are very dangerous solo becaus of that. Try bringing a healer

Lots of things can stun you. Igaras can do it, for example. So can Kizoars.
What makes Kipee stun so unique is the duration. I have been stunned on the first blow of combat and stayed stunned so long (8+ hits from the Kipee) that I died before I could do anything. When something else stuns you, it usually only lasts for 1 or 2 blows... so you can usually recover.
So, as the above poster said... avoid them solo. Their stuns are silly powerful.

I looked back at one fight with a Hard Kipee and I got in 4 hits to its 8 due to stunning. Yes, they're difficult to solo, but they're worth the most XP to me out of the other creatures I'm currently hunting and they drop the highest quality mats too. I can't stay away from them, unfortunately, but they're a crap shoot - I win some, I lose some. All I can do to give myself the best chance of winning a fight solo against them is to go into the combat with full health and my Self Heal spell recharged and ready to use. Unfortunately, there's also another factor beyond my control; I might start the combat against the kipee with no other kipees on the radar, but a second one might wander within range during the fight and get dragged into it.

Pick your targets wisely and taunt them away from the pack. Spend a few moments studying the movement patterns and you'll fare much better over time.

Kipee are the only creature that have a special stun attack.
Any other creature that stuns you did it merely by getting a critical hit to your head. Critical hits happen 5% of the time, and when its on the head it stuns for a moment. Any creature that does melee/ranged can do that.

Since it hasn't been said already, NPC gear is terrible... getting some player-crafted gear should be top of your list of things to do

I make Excellent low durability gear very cheap, tailored to measure until first shower.

I don't know in which regions you hunt normally, but I find that clopper are very good game too. They do nasty damage, you may prefer smashing weapons over slashing weaponry, but they do not stun.
