Yes. Instead of being set in a generic "land" or "world," Ryzom is set on the living planet Atys, which is essentially a giant spherical plant in space. You can see in the sky a nebula, a ringed planet, a moon, a sun that merely intensifies during day instead of rising, and Atys' branches which form the Canopy and will eventually grow to form a new surface as the planet grows. The Karavan are mysterious technological beings from elsewhere who have brought metal ships and energy guns to Atys, preaching the word of their goddess Jena but not sharing their technology and never revealing what they might look like beneath their suits. Magic comes from the energy in the Sap, a substance which flows through Atys itself and parellel to blood in homins.
Are there guns or other sifi weapons i can learn to use?
Kind of. There are ranged weapons (rifles, launchers, pistols, bowrifles, etc.) but they are not available in Ruins of Silan and they're made entirely from organic material (there is no metal or stone on Atys since you don't find inorganic materials like that growing on a plant).
So if there are really no classes, can i train whatever i want to?
Yes. There is no limit or restriction on the number of skills you can learn, you don't have to give up old skills to learn new ones, etc. The skill tree starts with Fight, Magic, Harvest, and Craft. You can train any and all of these. They branch into more skills at 21, 51, 101, 151, and 201, and the max in each skill branch is 250. This makes for about 11,000 levels total, all attainable (though no one has ever done it because of how much time and effort it would require).
How do i know if i've lvl'ed up?
Press B. In the window that comes up ("Action Progression") you can monitor your level in each skill and how far you have progressed in a level. You will also be notified onscreen when you gain a level. By the way, you level a particular skill by using it, i.e. killing some animals with magic will give you experience points in Magic and killing animals with a sword will give you experience points in Fight.
Can i really play on the newbie island as long as i like?
Yes.
