Suggestion: Creature Handling in Ryzom

I've been wondering about this since I first started a few days ago, and I really think it'd be cool to have in a game where creature AI is so interesting.

Well, to start off, lets talk about acquiring an animal. I was thinking this system could work much like SWG's creature handling system worked. Walk up to an animal, talk to it (with the "tame" command), soothe it, until it is trained. Not very inventive I know, which is exactly why I'd like to hear some of your suggestions on this. Perhaps you'd have to coax it with a bit of food? Cage it for a bit until its more docile? *shrugs*

Now for interaction between you and your animal. Everyone loves the idle animations of creatures as they walk over to check you out, but those animations of a cautious nature. Animations of affection would be nice, such as them licking your leg, or something along those lines (imagine a yubo getting a little too "friendly" with your leg :P ). But this is more cosmetic purposes than anything else, not really necessary (but still important to me :P )

Obviously you'd need to feed your animal. I would rather not see the feeding be like it is WoW (loot some meat, feed to your animal) I think crafters should be involved in this. Just take your food-stuffs you've acquired from killing other creatures or harvesting, and either take to crafter to make special food for your animal, or make it yourself, whichever you prefer. There would be two different types of animal feed: Herbivore and Carnivore. I don't think I need to elaborate on where the materials for each would come from ;) .

Now for combat. Different types of animals would have different types of abilities, obviously, perhaps make a skill-set in which you can improve upon certain attacks of animals. Also, I think that there should be a weapon restriction when you have your pet(s) called. Maybe the more animals you have out, the less complicated the needs to be. Say you have one animal called, you can't use a sheild, as you need the free-hand to keep the animal under control. Two Animals, you can't use a two-handed sword at this point, as their too cumbersome, and so on and so forth. Perhaps this would be the point in which guns could become favored by creature-handlers.

As for how many animals you can have out at once, I think that should be determined by your skill in creature-handling.

Any thoughts, ideas, criticisms? Remember this is only a suggestion for the devs to think about (if they see it) ;)

i think ryzom fighting is designed mostly as teamplay: you can either keep up an affliction link or nuke but not both together, or you can be heavy melee but not debuff your target, or tanking multiple targets but not doing much damage.
therefor i would say you can either control pets in combat but not heal, shoot, nuke, hit same time. this would grant that you still have to team with others.

if ryzom should have pets like in swg is another discussion i leave to others :p

Well, it sounds like a fun idea. However, it seems that this would take a lot of work to do. The ryzom staff is already working hard as it is, mabye hold off on this idea until after R2, or until things clam down for them.

Creature handling, well.. I'm not so keen on every toon running around with his personal pet, like a pokemon. However, I liked how it was implemented for rangers and druids in Neverwinter Nights. Animal Empathy, which isn't safer than digging with harmful stanzas in heavy armor at first.

I agee with Ulani. Its a nice idea, though probably only set for a certain bunch of "tame" creatures, for balancing issues mainly. Though something like how its easier to tame a cat or a dog instead of a wolf or a lion?

Though I would kill to ride a bodoc! Go, Piggy Cow, go!

I'd be happy with just having decorative pets, that follows you around and looks cute. Yubos ftw!

you cannot keep up the link, you'll break it each time using the the double spell. so to use effectiv affliction + ele you have to be two.
