Why should I go with a faction?

I'm a newbie, and just hit 30 fame in Karavan. So I can join the Karavaneers, but I'm not sure why or when I should do it.

You shouldn't!

They're both a bunch of lying, manipulative swine and you should stay neutral. You can still join any guild, you lose access to a few teleports but your conscience should remain relatively clear.

Never forget the third way :)

There is a very nice post explaining the game mechanics of faction choice: :)

It's allright if you want to be karavaneer, but you should read the lore and make your own story, not necessarily an open RP one, maybe you don't want to RP at all ... but for your own pleasure of the game see what you like more.

Make your own mind about it. That's the best in Ryzom, compared to other games, the freedom of an open story. Now I know freedom can be a burden but having in mind this is a game you plan to play for a long time, your image of your own character is important to give you full satisfaction of your future line of action.

Sniff around who are the lore keepers in game. It's always better to hear the stories from a friend rather than reading web pages. I know Kyerna is very good for neutral lore and Rushin for kami lore, somebody will point you players that do the same for Karavaneers.

Equal important criteria is your friends. If most of your friends are karavaneer, go karavan, if most of them are kamis think more about it.

You don't need a faction at all for a long time (at least a month in my opinion), whatever people might say. But once you picked a faction your fame, slower or faster will increase and if you want to change is a darn lot of not so funny work to do to get it inversed.

You want to dig PR: go North Dyron or Grove of Dementia and go inside the PR. There are plenty of mats you might need right in the safe area at entrance. You want pvp then duel or make sure you know when the OP wars are taking place.

Don't listen to advices that sound too excentric. I remember a respected old player who told me if I go Kami I will never be able to enter Faihaven anymore (*chuckles*).

Listen to all but use your judgement and you'll feel good :)

If choosing a faction, pick one only when you decide which one is right for you. Fame is easy to change - if you're 30 karavan now and decide you want to be a kamist, then you can just do missions for the kami (or kill the right tribes) until you're +30 kami. So, whatever fame you have right now, shouldn't dictate your decision.

It's best to remain neutral while you decide for yourself what you want out of factions in game. Also, you can always renounce faction membership at the same place (karavan temple, kami sanctuary) that you complete the rite, and become neutral again.

If lore is a factor in your gameplay decisions, you should read as much of the lore as you can, both at the temple/sanctuary sites and on the chronicles section and the official site. If lore and rp aren't a major factor for you, then really, faction choice boils down to which set of high level/prime roots teleporters you would prefer, and which group of people (neutrals, kamists or karavaneers) you'd rather spend most of your time with. It's true that teams are still formed without regard to faction alignment, but that's not true of guilds now.

Bottom line, do some in game and on forum homework, and make up your mind based on what is best for you. :)

or the 4th way.. go faction for tp's but play a neutral person

basically the differance of being faction are 2 fold:

1. differnt teleportation opertunities including teleports in 250 areas and prime roots

2. the ability to turn on your faction pvp tag and engage in pvp with other 'tagged' homins around atys.

while i don't really enjoy pvp i do understand some do so you may see it as an advantage to become faction tagged. however you have to activate the tag so you won't automatically be attackable as soon as you gain enough fame to join a faction.

i am personlly factioned but only so i can telport to prime roots as this is my main dig land. in all other aspects i play a neutral. for some ppl there isn't a differance but the way i see it it is how you play the game as to what faction you are not what the game mechanics say.
