PvP questions and a comment

Post by camel66 »

Howdy all,

Back again with questions galore once again. Just as a side comment, as someone has stated you get no DP when u get a rezz so I died last nite near the Throne Room and asked and asked for a rezz and none ever came. Oh well. I died almost immediately after rezzing not 50m away from the Respawn point near the lake and still got no answers for my rezz calls. So while everyone is patting themselves on the back about how great the community is. I've only seen it on the forums and not much on the island, when it comes to rezzes and heals. Though I was able to ask some people about the location of X resource and was thankfully given a pretty prompt response.

While I hope my comment doesn't sound too much like a whine, it's more an observation that as SoR attempts to become more popular it will also attract more people of the unfriendly sort.

Ok back to the questions:

1) How active is PvP on this server?
2) Is there a leaderboard of who is dominating PvP on this server?
3) How heavily contested are Outposts?
4) Are some outposts better than others?
5) Do the outposts change owners much or are the guilds that own them impossible to get out?
6) Are there many guilds that PvP?
7) Do guilds actually declare against each other?
8) Is it possible to solo in PvP or would you constantly get jumped by bands of people?
9) In the Prime Roots can you kill someone on your team?
10) What's to stop someone from constantly switching back and forth from a Neutral to a declared Allegiance.
11) Are there many hacking issues - PvP? in General?
a) PvP - speed hacks, land or physics exploits,
b) General - duping, pathing exploits, etc..
12) How responsive is combat during PvP?
13) In what form does PvP take shape on this server most commonly? Wandering/Ganking? Outpost Battles/Sieges? Arenas? Staged Events? Team Duels?

Let me expound on 12 and see if maybe my understanding or experiences just aren't developed enough yet. Currently, only 30 in melee, combat seems like I'm targetting X Mob and hoping Y attack lands. At times I might see one of the specials like, Opening after Dodge, lite up on my toolbar, but I hardly have either the time or I just dont notice it fast enough to make effective use of it, nor does it seem to make a noticeable difference in combat. Also, fighting the same type of creatures I can go thru several and they might barely touch me and then all of a sudden one seems to be kicking my tail around the island? The controls seem sluggish during this combat as well as for magical combat? Is the end goal of PvP to have more HP than the other guy and spam specials and hope for a win? So while I say the controls seem sluggish, maybe the combat is too fast and I'm not able to keep up with the combat spam.

Any advice or observations on the combat system would be great. While I haven't exactly advertised this game to my guild since I'm undecided, at least 5 others have downloaded the client and started chars on RoS. We come from a very heavy PvP oriented clan but several of us like to craft as well. This seems like a good match until something better comes along. So I started playing in hopes of being mostly a crafter, as more of my friends come into the game they each ask me how PvP is and I can only tell them that it I dont think it happens until the mainland.

You really have the wrong game if your here looking for PvP. It can be done to an extent but even the biggest PvPers are typically limited to killing tagged crafters and AFKers at the Yrkanis stables. There are plenty of other threads about PvP so I won't go into the things you could search for, just wanted to note that though there is PvP here... your not going to see much other than some the occasional OP battle or fight over Super Nodes at season change.

OK, up front I'm an anti PvPer, even though I participate. I don't really think it has any place in RPGs as it is counteproductive and comes from a different gaming background to RPGs. RPGs being traditionally cooperative and non-competetive, based upon working together in a complimentary fashion to overcome obstacles.

So, I don't like it, my viewpoint is biased.

That said, in answer to your points.

1) This is going to sound like a hedge, but 'more active than I'd like, not active enough for the hardcore PvPers' There is an outpost battle at least once every week or two, but that's only because things have acheived a semi-stalemate with a slow crush on the Kami side. Not a huge number of people actively participate in PVP and even those tagged may not really be fans of it, they just want to show their faction loyalty.

2) No, there is no leaderboard. One can gauge which faction is by observing outposts and reading the forums however.

3) Depends on the outpost. The Kami keep trying to retake a few while the Kara slowly grab more and more OPs off them at a slow but steady rate. The fight has deviated from the original idea to become FvF with virtually no GvG action going on.

4) Yes. OPs produce different levels of crystals and different special materials with differing amounts of utility.

5) If owned by a differing faction they can be taken, fighting within your own faction wouldn't go down too well though.

6) Actively or passively? There aren't a massive number of really pro PvP guilds but most guilds have a few people who engage, reluctantly or otherwise.

7) Guilds declare on outposts and then are, usually, backed by their factions, neutrals pulled one way or another and mercenaries.

8) The situation wouldn't normally come up and the only circumstance in which solo PvP would really be doable would be in the activated PR areas or against tagged people as a run-by ganking. Which wouldn't make you popular.

9) I'm not sure any more.

10) The time and effort to register a faction. You don't need to anyway, you can just turn off your tag. Plus you could REALLY balls up your fame.

11) No. There's aggro dragging and spawn camping which is unsavoury. A new problem is neutral healing, which is exploitable but will likely be fixed in some fashion fairly soon. The community generally doesn't tolerate it and nor d the GMs.
a) No. There's a camera hack but it's PVP utility is IMO, limited.
b) No.

12) You just need to keep a better eye on it. Attack after dodge/parry/crit/feint are used to save you HP stamina and to fuel heavier more specialised hits. Make maximum use of them and they can really turn a battle. Circle attack is another must IMO.

13) Outpost battles.

Hello Camel66

In addition to what the other posters has written:

Ryzom is a game that was effectively PVE for about a year before a longer PVP event came and later also Outpost PVP. So you will see players worried about the PVP features destroying the overall helpful and newbie friendly environment. It has been debated quite a lot.

There is also a feeling (or a fact, I don't know) that there is an imbalance between the factions Kami/Karavan, which might be the reason that some of the outposts never change owner.

Overall, you will probably be rezzed 1000 times before you get ganked.

Re-posting what I said in another thread, even though some have touched on parts of it already.
Me wrote: It should be mentioned though that PvP isn't happening all the time here. In fact it's usually *not* happening at any given moment.

The open GvG zones are mostly used for harvesting so if someone went down to fight players they'd havean easy time coming across them all in focus gear and no weapons equipped. The intent is you can fight over the valuable resources but we usually get along without bloodshed.

Another option is the faction FvF tag system. One who has committed themself to Kami or Karavan can enable a PvP flag that makes them attackable anywhere on Atys, by anyone of the opposing faction who has theirs on as well. There can be random skirmishes but they are infrequent. The most common use is what we call "Yrk PvP" where one or more Kamis come to the Matis capital of Yrkanis and poke a Karavan or two provoking them into a fight. This usually ends up being small team based when a few interested players on each side call some friends and go back and forth with each other in town. There's nothing in particular to be lost or gained in these fights but pride and experience (edit: not the XP type). This can happen once or twice a day but not always.

The biggest fights are of course the outpost battles. These usually end up being huge and tremendously dependant on organization and coordination. (As well of course as turnout, if one side shows up with many more people the other doesn't have much of a chance) Outpost battles happen maybe once or twice a week.

I´m not into PvP so just let me respond on your "comment".
Just to clearify beforehand, this is not supposed to be elitist or arrogant, it´s just a response to your question.

You refere to the friendly community and well, it is friendly and not just on the forums. Only thing you overlooked is: What you get on the Newbe-Isle is not the community that was built up for about 2 - 4 years now.
It´s the Newb Island Community. There are differnet people down there.
People like you, who may come for the friendly community, or not.
People who just enjoy the free game and won´t look the other way.
Who just want to play for themselves and simply don´t know any better.
And how could they?
They just don´t know or don´t care (sadly) that it is considered good form to rezz someone in need. I hope that they will learn eventually, but they are as new to the game as you, so you may grant them some slack ;)
So your presumption that new players who aren´t in game much longer then yourself should act like those who have built this special reputation is a bit faulty, don´t you think? ;)
All I can say is: Don´t judge them (or us) for what you may have heard.
Don´t judge a book by it´s cover. If you want to experience the overly friendly community that is praised all over the Net, then come to the Mainland to experience it.

And just to make the point: This is no flame, or hate post againt the Newbe-Isle Players. It´s just fact.

Have Fun

It really depends on the time of day, I've been on RoS a lot, and 90% of rez calls get answered. Just because you dont get one every time you die, doesnt meant the community is bad. :p

Sometimes you just gotta take the dp, which on RoS, is very tiny.

Well a number of things can contribute to this.

1. How close were the nearest players? You only have a few minutes after you die, so if someone is on the other side of the map when they hear you ask for help, they will never get to you in time. Many were the times I was in the kitin jungle and heard people asking for rezzes in places I'd never reach before they had to respawn. Just because YOU are there, does not mean others are there.

2. Silan is a newbie island. That means that some of the players on it may not even have the heal skill needed to rez you. Still others will not realize they could rez you with their heal skill (a lot of people think there must be a 'rez' skill and it takes a while to learn otherwise). It also means that if you say, 'need a heal at the throne room' a bunch of them won't even know where that is. Do you know how many people had to be told, during the 3 weeks I was on Silan, where the Kami of the Lake spawn point was? It's not actually listed on your map until you visit it (I did not realize this because I blundered into it by accident very early on), so that means that half or more of the players won't even be able to find you there.

Having been here for about 6 weeks now, I think the community is quite good. But you should NOT expect people to drop what they are doing and run all over the island trying to rez you. Newbies won't know where to look or even how to do it, and vet players like me would say, "Ah just respawn... the debt on the island is trivial." You can clear the debt in like 5 minutes.

If people are close enough to be on your radar, then yes it is somewhat reasonable to hope for them to come rez you. But otherwise, I don't think it's reasonable to expect total strangers, in any community, and especially other newbies, to spend long minutes running around looking for you just to give you a rez.

I died many many many times on my first character and was only rez'd once while in a group. Each time I chose where I wished to respawn and clicked on respawn, copped the xp penalty waited to heal and run off again to get get more xp and complete missions.

My main character (2nd one) has only spawned twice around 20th level, both times it was convenient to a point as I was able to use the respawn to complete missions and the xp gained (and some) paid the xp penalty. I asked for a respawn twice , first time a very patient player spent 5 minutes hitting me with heal until I revived (432 health) the second time a player run by (I didint ask was busy chatting to a guide about missions) watched him heal me once get disillusioned and move on (I laughed but sympathised with him noting my 432 health and his 15 heal). I currently have heal 3 to ensure I can get them up faster and will continue to build it on the principal that if you help others in time they get into the habbit themselves (i'm a good example of it).

Personally I have assisted in 3 rez's as I was running by and numerous heal buffs on resting / fighting players so they wouldnt get to the needing a rez.

Today I was in ruins and answered a call to rez but he couldnt tell me where he was apart from on a hill and though I looked I couldnt find him. I drew the line at moving onto a hill occupied by looters as I dont see the point in me getting killed trying to rez another as wise.

You say you spawned 50m from your dying spot, why didint you select one of the other respawn points, there are two in town and two close to each other past the throne just have to click to select.

I can sympathise with you as I have been there as well, and know from personal experience that even if you are in a group theres no garauntee you can be rez'd. My two spawning where due to a player (not grouped with)biting off more than he could chew and I died as collateral damage as the looter trains went past. You just have to shrug, clean off the blood and be thankful that you respawn at least with all your belongins with you and not left behind on a timer so other players can loot your body while you are trying to get back to it. I have seen and heard players travel long ways to go res someone but as said previously, others are not always were you are nor close by.

Hope your gaming experience isnt sullied too much but hang in there, it's only xp and doesnt take long to recover (AO you loose everything you earnt after your last level).

It seems like the addition of PvP to an environment such as Ryzom has had a net positive effect. At least the majority of people I've seen on these boards seem to be able to refrain from the usual cliches and irrational blanket statements about PvP and the people who participate in it.

I wonder how people would react if it played a larger role when some of the other world sections are fleshed out?
