A foraging question

Hello,
I'm still trying and learning this game. There are several aspects of Ryzom which i find truly
great most importandly the lore and the community. I'm a little confused at foraging at the
moment thought.
I expirience two problems described below while trying to forage particular resources on the
trial island on the island on the lake.
Problem 1
I'm trying to track a particular resource. I'm using: deposite tracking 100m, only fine
materials, minor shell prospection. I go toward a source till the counter shows something
about 5 meters. Than I run in circle keeping the distance at those 5 meters. It should be
pretty safe to assume that the source is located in the middle of the circle. Than I'm using
prospection to locate the source: 40 degrees cone, range 10 meters, only fine materials and
minor shell prospection. I cannot find the source althought I'm prospecting not only exact
location found by tracking, but also in the surrounding arrea.
Problem 2
on the entire north part of the island when I use resource tracking as described in problem 1 the counter shows ALWASY that the source is 1m away ANYWHERE I'm standing! now how is this possible? This dosn't happens only when I'm standing directly on the shore or on the souhtern part of the island
It would be very helpful to me if someone could explain to me that am I doing wrong or direct me to some detailed description of foraging skills.
thanx
Mr Neutron

Problem 1: Tracking does not take you to the resource directly, but to an area where the resource is, try prospecting further out
Problem 2: There are a lot of resources in the north, again try prospecting around, You may need upto Choice or only choice up there though to help you find anything.

thank you akicks, I'll try that

Also note that since you do not have source specific prospecting yet, you may be sitting right on top of the spot. When you prospect you get other mats, or no mats at all because the accuracy is not as precise.
Are the mats near/at the spot your search brought you ? Most likely they are, you just don't have the specificity needed to get the source to pop, or the message needed to tell you why you are not getting them.

Well, for both tracking and prospectiong I do specify a resource I want to find + quality of it e.g.: minor shell group plus only fine materials.
The problem is that the area where this specific resourse should be seems to be quite big. The question is how big can this area be? if it's 20 meters from where the tracking counter goes to 1m that's fine, but when it's more than it can be very frustrating trying to find a source. At least till one gets 50 meters prospecting range plus 180 degrees cone

Yes in the beginning deposit tracking is sketchy at best.. It works much better later on when you can use the major propections and wider angle/ longer range prospects.
Untill then, when you find a spot mark it on your map.. your collection of markers will soon grow and you should be able to find anything you need.
If you cant find a particular resource ask in guild or region..
Im sure someone wll be happy to show you where to get the goods, me included if its Jungle or *gulp* PR

The nodes can be very large (>50m across, I am sure), especially for Basic, Fine and Choice materials. Excellent (and I guess Supreme) are often much tighter (<10m across). Always note where you are when your Tracking action finds a node because the tracking ability will take you to the edge of the node that is
closest to where you started from.
As already said, the second problem must be because you are sitting on the node already, but your prospecting action hasn't find a source within its scope - keep scanning the area and pay attention to the specific messages you get in System Info window. Also, using the largest angle and distance for your prospection can be a hindrance
Popping a source depends upon probabilities so the larger the area you prospect over, the more difficult it is for you to pop one that is in fact there. This is the difference between Minor and Major material specializations.

I'd like to add some question there:
1. Does "Minor Clothes Raw Material Prospection" work like a filter reducing the result to just show cloths raw materials?
2. What's the difference to "Major Clothes Raw Material Prospection"?
3. Are those skills worth the skill credits?

I've never learnt the craft specific stanzas, sorry, I took the mat specific route, but it's my understanding that they are essentially the same. They both act as filters so that your search will only find sources of fibre, to use your example. The Major upgrade in each case improves your chances of finding what you are looking for. The craft specific skills are cheaper to learn and use (? I think), but the mat specific stanza eventually allows you to search for only Shu Fibre, rather than all fibres.
I have a suspicion that there is a payoff for using the more expensive skill, does anyone know? I'd also be interested to know if the two may both be used in the same prospection for even greater reliability.
Are they worthwhile? Well if you want to find your own sources for crafting something in particular then, yes, they're invaluable.

Yes, Minor Clothes Raw Material Prospection shows only sources that contain Cloths Raw Materials, which is aehhhmm fiber only. The Major increases the chance to find the given raw mats. I would go for the material specific prospection options, in the beginning. I think the craft specific prospecting options should detect kitin larvae too, but still then one of these should be sufficient.
