I had the same problem at first.
Just ask for teaming in regional chat, heal people you meet or help them in any other way and add them to your friends list if you think they're cool. Once they're on the firends list you'll always see whether they're online or not and can ask them for teaming again.
I hope you find some nice companions soon, since in a team and guild life on Atys is so much more fun really.
