Was wondering what starting lands the veterans felt were the easiest to progress magic/melee skills? Are there certain areas that lend themselves to progressing without large gaps in difficulty?

??? Maybe I'm confused here, but there be but one starting land, the Ruins of Silan. Unless you already know exactly what you want to do on Atys, I recommend that you complete the missions of all four trainer/mission givers, plus Chiang's missions. Then should you decide you want to follow a particular faction path, do that faction's missions as well. At that point, you have a well balanced character, and a good idea of what the four major branches of the skill tree entail. Gives you a good basis for future decisions.
Now, if you're asking what race your character should be, you gotta go Fyros!
Tryker and Zorai are tolerable also, but avoid them pasty pale, smelly, emaciated Matis at all costs!

Sorry, wasn't clear with that. I was refering to the racial starting land that you are ported to once you complete your stay on the island.

There does not exist any difference that could make it easier in one civ relative to another civ. My advice would be, read up on the lore and go for the race you would fancy
And Welcome to Atys

Appart from Tryker being realtively save to travel by its waterways and thereby being "safer" and Zorai having a large area of herbivore non Aggro Mobs around its capital and thereby being "safer".
But appart from that there are no real differnces, yes.
