Harvesting for Results ?

I'm still very noob at this I admit, but I am trying to get my head round the different extraction types.
Currently I have Harmful extraction 30 and Gentle Extraction 10
All I am really looking at so far is the obvious numbers as lv 30 resourses seem better than lvl 10.
Can someone please explain the benefits/pitfalls of gentle/harmful to a thicko like me.
Many thanks

Mirth

Harmful extraction damages the source more than gentle extraction, increasing the risk of explosion or gas. The numbers are the quality that you can dig. Harmful extraction 30 means you can extract up to a maximum of quality 30. There are gentle equivalents for all levels. Harmful is always available first and the gentle version 5 levels later.
Ideally you should dig at the maximum quality that you can for the best xp and use gentle extraction unless you have care plans or someone else caring for your source.
Hope this helps but I feel sure it will lead to more questions

Forage is like that to start with

also, I would like to add that although in theory you can (assuming your current level is your highest harvesting level and no careplanner) extract mats of qX+15 once you are at least lvl X (for X=...15, 25, 35...e.g. a lvl 15 should be able to extract q30 using aggressive extraction), in practice I would not suggest it, unless you really need that quality, or you are willing to try for those extra xp. I don't think it's worth it, you'll get more explosions, more unstable sources and specially, random quality decreases (e.g. you are at lvl 15, getting q28 and suddenly poof, it drops q7 and you get the "you have spoiled the quality of the material" or even "you have failed to catch the material" plus filling your bag of all sorts of weird qualities... q13, q15, q18, q22, q30 etc.
A simple rule of thumb is : extract the quality rounding up your level (e.g. lvl 136 in forest, extract q140, going for q150 or higher because you are higher level in another land or because you learnt the aggressive q150 extraction is imho not worth it) and a common set up is gentle speed, aggressive rate and gentle quality. My advice, learn Gentle Quality 20 and use it

I use gentle 20 and gentle 30. You can still get explosions but it is much more rare than harmful. I basically took harmful off my toolbar and don't use it.

on the newb island, most of the sources you find are q 10 or q 15 max (presumably higher further over). For starting out, you get no benefit from using a q 30 extraction on a q 15 source. Once you find higher sources, then worry about buying q30 extraction stanzas

eventually you`ll get harmful/gentle rate and speed of extraction also, thats when digging starts to get interesting

On Newbie Island, in general...
Q10 is by the ranger camp.
Q10-15 is in the Hunting Grounds.
Q20 is in the Ruins of Silan area.
Q30 is in the Kitin Jungle.
You will usually find Basics in the Ruins/Hunting ground (though not always) and find some basics but also a lot of Fine stuff in the Kitin Jungle.

There's also Q15 in the arena on Silan, and if you know where/how to look, there's a lot of fine in the Ruins, the Hunting Grounds, and around the camp.
