I seem to recall an interview from someone on the dev team that said they were drooling over R2 because it used the same tools they're gonna be using to make new content and the whole process was gonna be that much easier for them once it was installed...or something like that?

Yup, exactly. The Devs will use R² to implement more "Contend" too.
